South Pacific, Polynesia or Hawaii, ca. 19th century CE. Made of a smoothed grey-green basalt, with a rounded base and a slightly pronounced handle, this style of poi pounder is known as "knobbed". Size: 3.3" W x 6.25" H (8.4 cm x 15.9 cm)Poi pounders, alongside adzes, were the most important stone tools in pre-contact Polynesia and Hawaii (Europeans introduced steel weapons). They are used for pounding cooked taro root into po, a stable of the diet. Taro root was steamed in an earthen oven, peeled using shells, and placed onto a slab of wood to be pounded. The pounded results were blended with water into a highly nutritious paste. Traditional calabash bowls were used as containers to hold poi mixtures, and traveling royalty were accompanied by their own poi maker, with his or her own poi-making implements like this one. Provenance: Ex-Kalman Collection, Arcadia, CA; Ex-Jules Berman Collection, acquired before 1972. Condition: Areas of age loss and discoloration to surface as shown, with one larger loss on the lower body. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Western Europe, ca. 16th century CE. A sharp, deadly steel left-handed dagger, personalized for its owner. Swirling incised designs flow from the upper portion of the blade down a broad central ridge that tapers with the blade to a fine point. The quillion (guard) is decorative, with a curved design; above this, the handle is made of dark horn capped with amber and then metal with an iron pin through the top of the pommel to hold all the elements of the handle in place. Comes with custom stand. Size: 10.55" L x 1.95" W (26.8 cm x 5 cm); height on stand: 10.75" (27.3 cm)Although this dagger is decorative, do not let that fool you - it would have been a crucial part of a man's wardrobe, kept at the ready for action. Daggers during the Renaissance were multi-purpose tools, invaluable in melee fighting, and particularly useful when paired with the rapier, which came from Italy and Spain around 1500 CE. By the 1540s, we see many daggers like this one, made to be held in the left hand while the sword was held in the right. Like this one, they commonly had a ring-guard in front of the quillion and the pommel. The incised decorative elements were probably made to match their paired weapon, and reflect the beauty and attention to design of craftsmen in the Renaissance period. Provenance: Ex-Private San Francisco, CA collection Condition: Blade and guard have dark patina and surface wear/pitting in its lower two-thirds. Design incised on upper portion of blade is clear. Horn on grip has dark patina; small chips and one small area of loss in the area where it meets the amber at the pommel. The amber has an area of loss that is visible only from one side. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120062
Egypt, New Kingdom, ca. 1550 to 712 BCE. A tall pottery mummiform ushabti (shabti), mold-made, and painted a bright yellow-orange. Darker orange details outline the wig, facial details, and arms. The feet are less well-defined, with the body ending in a rounded, flat base. Many of the elements familiar from the more common later ushabtis, like the Nemes crown, hieroglyphs, back pillar, and agricultural tools are not present, making this a rarer example. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.7" W x 8.7" H (6.9 cm x 22.1 cm); size on stand: 3" W x 9.45" H (7.6 cm x 24 cm).The ancient Egyptians believed that after they died, their spirits would have to work in the "Field of Reeds" owned by the god of the underworld, Osiris. This meant doing agricultural labor - and it was required by all members of society, from workers to pharaohs. Ushabti were made to stand in for the deceased, performing the hard work. During the New Kingdom, ushabti were reserved for members of the upper class. Provenance: Ex-Hagar Collection, St. Louis, MO Condition: Intact, with much remaining pigment. #120006
Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak Peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of oracle / divination devices, one carved from a water buffalo rib, the other from the scapula of an ox, both inscribed with icongraphically symbolic figural and geometric patterns (see discussion below for additional discussion on this) as well as Batak characters and Sanskrit text. Comes with complementary stand, also made from carved bovine bones. Size: rib bone piece measures 18.75" L (47.6 cm); scapula measures 10.75" L (27.3 cm); stand measures 10.25" L x 8.5" H (26 cm x 21.6 cm)Batak priests (datu) inscribed sacred texts on sheets of bark, bamboo cylinders, as well as the rib and shoulder bones of oxen and water buffalo as we see in this example. These writings-magic formulas, oracles, recipes for medicines, and instructions for rituals and cures-were passed from generation to generation within a priestly class. Inscriptions on rib bones often contain calendrical information used by priests to divine auspicious days for particular activities. The bones also brought good luck to their owners. The beauty of the script and the poetic language were both appreciated. For agricultural communities, the calendar is obviously a critical tool used to guide planting, growth, and the time of harvest. These calendars record time in accordance with the movement of the sun and the moon. Beyond this, bones were also used as an oracle by a priest (or datu) to predict the future and assist them in selecting lucky days for travel or important events, such as the opening of a new rice field or a marriage. The calendars on these bones are represented by the rectangles filled with small squares. Note: the 12 columns represent each of the twelve months and the 30 vertical squares comprising each column represent the thirty days of each month. What's more, each day is marked with signs that tell whether they are good or bad for certain events. The writing on the remainder of the bones is written in Sanskrit, an ancient Buddhist language. Although many of the characters and images incised and carved in relief can be understood only by the piece's maker and his students, the scorpion most likely represents the constellation Scorpio, which was traditionally regarded as a bad omen for most ceremonial events. The other figure snake-like creatures probably represent Naga Padoha, who according to Batak legend is forced beneath the earth by a sword; when he wiggles, the people feel an earthquake coming on. They then shout “suhul, suhul” from village to village. This phrase means “sword-grip” and is used to remind the Naga Padoha of the sword that keeps him pinned under the earth. Provenance: Ex-Private Cleveland, OH collection acquired at auction Condition: Expected age wear to bone calendar/almanac tools. Stand shows minor nicks to bone surface and losses to underside. #119892
