* Secret Spitfires. A WWII Spitfire pneumatic rivet gun by John Macdonald & Co Ltd, Pollockshaws, Glasgow, stamped 'Size 4 No E421893', the grip stamped with war department arrow and serial no 2994/55, 31 cm long, together with a tin of rivets and related items QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Norman Parker (1926-2024), Aviation Historian & Chairman of Amesbury History Society. Having formerly belonged to Bette Blackwell (1921-2018). Bette's story is told in the 2016 documentary "Secret Spitfires" in which this rivet gun is featured.Bette Blackwell was one of thousands of civilian women to be recruited during WWII. She was part of a secret workforce producing Spitfires in factories hidden in Salisbury and the surrounding areas. The Luftwaffe bombed Southampton in what is commonly referred to as the "Southampton Blitz" on 26 September 1940. They targeted Supermarine Spitfire Factories near Woolston. Having reduced the number of factories, production was moved more inland to Salisbury.Bette Blackwell was called up to help with the war effort and told to report to Wessex Motor Garage unbeknown that this was now a factory that build Spitfires. On her arrival she was overwhelmeled by the noise and fumes of the machines. She was expected to master the tools and techniques of riveting quickly. The factory produced fuselages and tail unit leading edges and riveters worked in pairs to hold the rivet up to protect the thin aluminium sheets. Bette often did the job of 'holding up' because she was small and could fit inside the body of the aircraft. She worked 12 hours a day for 6 days a week and the women had to hit delivery targets. They were well rewarded for the hardwork, well paid and regular bonuses. Bette worked in the factory for 2-3 years but never saw the aircraft that she worked on move out of the factory owing to the secrecy. Salisbury remained unbombed unlike Southampton because of the level of "top-secrecy".Over 2000 Spitfires were built in Salisbury (10% of all Spitfires produced during WWII).

[Abbey Scenery 204; B. Adams, London illustrated 1604-1851 (1983), no. 72, p.170-5], folio (405 x 300mm.), T. Bensley for T. Malton, 1792-[1801]Footnotes:ONE OF THE FIRST AND FINEST SERIES OF LONDON VIEWS - RARE HAND-COLOURED COPY IN A HANDSOME BAYNTUN RIVIERE BINDING.Thomas Malton (1748-1804) exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, and was principally known for his views of the capital's streets, squares and buildings. He also designed scenery for Covent Garden Theatre and ran a drawing school whose students included Turner and Girtin. The 100 meticulously observed views in the Picturesque Tour Through London were all composed, engraved and aquatinted by Malton, a remarkable endeavour at a time when the aquatint process was still in its infancy in England. The work represents the first large collection of aquatints of London, or anywhere else in the country, and includes views of Chelsea Hospital, Hyde Park, Grosvenor Square, Westminster Abbey, The Horse Guards, Charing Cross, St. Martin's in the Fields, The Adelphi, Covent Garden, Somerset House, St. Paul's, Mansion House, The Bank of England, Royal Exchange and Greenwich Hospital.'The Picturesque Tour is remarkable, if not unique, in that the 100 large plates of which it is composed were all engraved and aquatinted by the artist in person' (Bernard Adam). 'Like Horwood's Plan – and unlike works like Modern London or the Microcosm – Malton's book was pitched as a solo endeavour, a vision of the city produced by a man keen to establish his cultural credentials and capable of fine artistry, accurate perception, technological innovation and skilful composition... London looms in Malton in ways that most other contemporary illustrations fail to capture. The metropolis is not a threatening city in his works, but it is one that reaches up in great spires and vaulting arches, a place of proud ingenuity and soaring, untroubled magnificence' (Matthew Sangster, www.romanticlondon.org/maltons-picturesque-tour-intro/).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
