A Gothic influenced joined planked elm cupboard, by Brian Irving, having a centre arched door and iron strapwork hinges flanked by two pierced 'windows', w.100cm, d.40cm, h.112cm Irving is a Suffolk furniture maker who attended the London College of Furniture for 2 years. After restoring the organ case in Burnley Town Hall he set about producing Gothic coffers, tables, chairs and carvings, using the traditional tools of the trade and wood which he had salvaged from centuries old East Anglian buildings.
A Japanese Ivory Okimono, Meiji period (1868-1912), as a carpenter sitting planing a window frame, a box of tools at his side, two character signature to red lacquer plaque, 6cm high 1cm deep split to top of head. Significant splits to reverse of figure, the longest 4.5cm. Box at right knee loose. Some typical minor staining and splitting throughout. 110313

Works, John Murray, 1853-57, each vol. with early ms. ownership signature on prelim. blank, marbled endpapers and edges, near contemp. dark blue calf, extrems. sl. rubbed in places, dotted line decorated raised bands, contrasting labels in second and third compartments, remainder filled with a variety of flower, leaf, and volute tools, covers with gilt double fillet border, single fillet on edges, blind milled turn-ins, sm. 8vo (8).

Browne, incl. frontis. and addn. title, half-title discarded, no errata leaf, marbled endpapers, upper hinge splitting at head, bookticket of Yehudi & Diana Menuhin on verso of front free endpaper, a.e.g., near contemp. green morocco, extrems. rubbed and spine faded, gilt rule decorated raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second compartment, remainder gilt panelled with a variety of volute tools, covers with gilt double fillet and floral scrolling roll border, inner panel composed of tassell tools between fillets, and large volute, fleuron, and seedhead cornerpieces, gilt roll on edges and turn-ins, 8vo. Smith I, 8. An attractive copy, with interesting provenance. (1).
*Fillets. A selection of five fillet wheels & five decorative rolls, including two single-line and two double-line fillets and one triple-line fillet, together with fifteen finishing tools including decorative tools and six pallets (one decorative), plus two agate burnishers (a small carton).
*Laying presses. A pair of beech laying presses, with approx. 48cm (19ins) between wooden screws, opening to approx. 31cm (12ins), together with a selection of backing and gilding boards, plus a small sewing frame, assortment of bookcloth, leather offcuts, two litho stones, miscellaneous bookbinding hand tools, equipment and bookbinding reference related. *Type. Seven sets of brass type, including serif type with letter heights of approx. 4mm & 5mm, and sans serif type with letter heights of approx. 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3mm (compressed) and 8mm, contained in three wooden type trays, together with type holder, and quantity of blocking foils, with a small collection of misellaneous bookbinding tools including, band nippers and backing hammer etc., plus a Hampson Bettridge adjustable finishing press with integral clamp for side bench attachment (a carton).
