An 18th century French gold etui, circa 1740, in a shagreen case, the finely cast and chased shaped etui with raised decoration of a classical female figure within a Rococo cartouche above another of sheep and further scrolls and fruit, flowers and musical instruments, the fittings include scissors, folding knife, bodkin and ear-scoop and leaves for notes, 3 7/8 x 1¼ x 5/8in. (9.5 x 3.25 x 1.25cm.), weight excluding fittings 64 gms.* Condition: Etui in very good condition overall - very crisp, little evidence of wear and hinge and push button clasp work well. Hinge is firm. Slight dent to one corner at base of base. Two tools missing from fittings - they are probably a pair of tweezers and a pencil with holder. The slot for the pencil is very shallow and we believe that part of a pencil has broken off inside. There is a little surface rust spotting to the steel blades of the sciccors. The case is good, with no losses to the shagreen. The inside has spots of contact rubbing to the red silk lining from the etui itself. Hinges good.
