An early Meiji, circa 1860, Shibayama Plaque, approx 9" square and framed by a lacquered and painted wood frame, the plaque being made up of carved ivory pieces applied to a black wood background, the fine signed Shibayama scene depicting a carpenter at work with his apprentice in the background. The carpenter sits upon a beam chiselling a joint whilst surrounded by an array of contemporary tools. The picture has a carved ivory cartouche in the left corner.
