Ward (Lynd) Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts, first trade edition, illustrations throughout by the author, ink inscription to front pastedown, small tear to upper margin of title, a few finger soils, light browning, original cloth-backed boards, bumping to spine ends and corners, light browning and foxing, some surface marks, a little rubbed to extremities, 8vo, 1930.*** When creating Madman's Drum, Ward used a variety of carving tools to achieve a level of detail for exaggerated emotional facial expressions. Lynd Ward wordless novels had a strong influence on the development of the graphic novel.

Like numerous other friendly societies of the time, its principal aim was the sharing of secret knowledge linked to the profession and mutual aid. In the 19th century, its activities of mutual insurance became predominant. By the end of the 20th C, it had become almost entirely extinct. Rome, moved to France by 1863 FRANCE, Fondation du Confédération générale de l'artisanat français [Foundation of the General Confederation of French Crafts], 1922, a bronze award medal by Lougarré and H.-A.-A. Dubois for Diels, young female to left, holding a leaved branch and a vessel from which flames rise, hands holding artisanal tools around, rev. wreath, un-named, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 50mm, 58.28g (CGMP p.163 for rev.; cf. iNumis MBS 32, 1422). Very fine, an interesting medal with elements of both Art Nouveau and early Art Déco in the design; in maroon gilt-blocked case of issue by Le Medaillier, Paris [M. Bousquet, Seul Representant, avenue de Minimes 30, Toulouse] £30-£40 --- Provenance: Bt Simmons April 2003. The Confédération générale de l'artisanat français was created in 1922 on the initiative of two Parisian shoemakers. Close to the radical-socialist political movement, and in particular to Étienne Clémentel (1864-1936), the senator who encouraged the artisans to create this union, it represented the principal artisans' voice during the inter-War years. Ackermann, 15th August 1800, three etched caricatures on one sheet (as published), contemporary hand-colouring, slight staining, some marginal closed tears, old collector's stamp (RA) to the lower right corner, 270 x 375 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:BM Satires 9616-9621. A rare Rowlandson caricature from the suite of 18 Masqueronians. Published in six sets of three they represented 'English types'. The subjects are displayed emblematically with the wares or tools of their trade worn as garlands. This trio represents a philosopher, a prostitute and an epicure.
