Coran miniature ancien, probablement Afrique du Nord XV-XVIe siècle An early miniature Qur'an, Probably North Africa, 15th-16th CenturyArabic manuscript on paper, 22-26 lines to the page written in small naskhi script in gold, red dots marking verse-endings, illuminated marginal devices, sura headings written in black ink on a gold ground with a device extending into the margin, five double-pages of illumination with outer margins decorated with stylised floral, geometric and knot motifs in colours and gold, brown leather binding with stamped diaper pattern, with flap 41 x 35 mm., 22 mm. deepFootnotes:ProvenanceProperty from a Royal Collection.Such miniature manuscripts of the Qur'an were primarily designed for their talismanic and protective properties, to be carried on the owner's person, whether in battle (when its properties would be particularly desirable) or in everyday life (perhaps when undertaking a journey). The manuscript would generally be carried in a silver case, often inscribed with verses from the Qur'an or prayers, and hung on a cord around the neck, or as a bazuband on the upper arm. A Large Leather Fly Wallet measuring 8" x 5" with velum and felt pages to the interior and containing a large quantity of both loose and packeted fly tying materials and some tools. Together with a pair of black japanned fly boxes, one by Malloch of Perth, containg various salmon flies. (3)A packet named 'Chatterer' with contents is present; condition of flies is variable, generally no rust to hooks, some guteyes missing, largest size 2 1/4"
MANNER OF NICOLAS de LARMESSIN II (1634-1694) 'Les Costumes Grotesques Et Les Metiers' a suite of eight drawings, each showing a stylised character, usually itinerant workers, merchants or street vendors, in the manner of Arcimboldo, the figure is portrayed in the accoutrement of his particular trade or occupation, with the clothing, hats, etc. constructed out of the tools from his trade, ink on Islamic polished or burnished paper, some with Persian or Hindi/Devanagari script visible within the paper, each 33.5cm x 23.8cm (8) Nicolas de Larmessin II was a seventeenth-century artist and engraver. The son of a bookseller, he hailed from an artistic family and may have been employed by his older brother and sister-in-law. Throughout his career, de Larmessin II conceived numerous “grotesque costumes,” possibly made at the behest of French engraver, Francois Jollain.
