A chatelaine clip and four chatelaine fittings, comprising; a brass chatelaine clip pierced and decorated with flowers and leaf scrolls with three chains, 13.5cm, a brass scissor sheath with spiral fluted, leaf scroll and other decoration, on hanging chain, 12cm, a blue velvet pincushion on brass swing frame and chain, 16cm, a gilt metal thimble bucket with hinged lid, leaf scroll handles and applied gardening tools and hat, 7cm, and a plated brass notelet with pencil clasp, 8cm x 4.5cm. A late 19th century French mother-of-pearl egg form standing etui, the egg mounted on a gilt scroll base incorporating fruiting vines, the base and top mounted with four small circular colour prints under glass of Paris landmarks, on an oval alabaster base, s.d., the interior with tool mount with gilt metal needlecase and stiletto, other tools lacking, 22.5cm high.

Margaret Whiteman(?). The gift of my dear Grandmother. This box was given to me by my dear S?? Fred. 1886”

A good George III mahogany and inlaid sewing box of rectangular form, inlaid to the lid and sides with unusually figured oval panels within garlands and floral inlays, the lid with inlaid spandrels, all with coloured feather bandings edged in boxwood, the right side with a spring activated drawer, with extending pull out arms to each side to take a pair of winding reels housed within the box, the red painted compartmentalised interior also fitted with a netting reel and cushion reversible and bolting in, together with a good selection of netting tools, the lid interior inset with a silk panel and circular whitework panel, one clamp s.d. below cup top, 28cm x 12cm x 13.2cm. A yellow and paper covered sewing box for a child, circa 1780, of rectangular form with embossed gilt paper borders and lid cartouche, the interior fitted with a pair of miniature books, each titled “Poems”, one in the form of a pincushion, the other an emery, and a further pair of books titled “Vol”, one as a needle book, the other with a tape measure wound on card and a folded paper pin packet, further fitted with ten card silk winders, a waxer, and a thimble aperture, the lid interior with fall front compartment with scissor sheath and two other tool holders, 11.2cm x 6.5cm x 5cm. * See Taunton (N) Antique Needlework Tools Colour plates 117 and 118 Page 108 for a very similarr box, however the attribution that the box is French is incorrect both the illustrated box and this example have English not French locks, in addition the ‘books’ are titled in English. A fine early 19th century Palais Royal gilt metal and floral paper mounted sewing basket of oval form, the floral decorated oval foot below inset teardrop mother-of-pearl panels within a wirework frame below a pierced and decorated swing handle, the interior with twenty glazed tear drop panels (two cracked), each with a bouquet of paper flowers, the centre of the basket with a bouquet of paper flowers below an oval domed glass, in gilt metal frame and lifting out to reveal a full complement of Palais Royal mother-of-pearl tools, comprising; a needlecase with anthemion carved ends and gilt oval and enamel pansy motif, a bodkin, a thimble with pansy motif, a pair of scissors the arms carved with mythical beasts and fitting over a circular mirror aperture with silk winder, a combination earspoon/tweezer with pansy motif, and a cut glass scent bottle with gilt metal top, 17cm x 15cm x 17cm (height with handle raised). * For an identical basket see Zalkin (E) Thimbles and Sewing Implements Page 116 and colour plate opposite, that example with applied pager to base “Naquiet & Co, Palais Royal No. 152, Md de Nauvenutes, brevetes du Roi Poui, Import de Thuile de Maiafsav, Paris.
