A Rare Cased .450 (52-Bore) Westley Richards Patent Breech-Loading 'Monkey-Tail' CarbineBy Westley Richards & Co., No. 2269, Dated 1864With blued sighted barrel (small areas of rust patination) rifled with bright spiral grooves and stamped 'Whitworth . Patent' at the breech, folding leaf back-sights each with central platinum line and folding adjustable long range sight calibrated to 800 yards, blued breech-lever stamped 'Westley Richards' and with triangle mark, signed flat case-hardened lock dated in a triangle on the tail, case-hardened hammer with blued safety-bolt in front, figured full stock with chequered pistol-grip and fore-end, the former with case-hardened cap, blued steel mounts (some loss of finish) comprising butt-plate, trigger-guard and fore-end cap, the first with circular hinged butt-trap cover opening to reveal cavities for cleaning tools, chequered trigger, sling mounts with original leather sling, original steel ramrod, and retaining much of its original finish: in original fitted deal case numbered to the carbine, the interior of the lid with maker's Directions labels for Loading, Cartridge and Mould, the exterior with steel mounts and remains of old paper labels, Birmingham proof marks 63.5 cm. barrelFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A Very Fine Cased .450 (52-Bore) Percussion Whitworth Patent Sporting And Target RifleBy The Whitworth Patent Rifle Company, No. 271, Circa 1860With blued barrel rifled with five bright spiral grooves and engraved 'Whitworth . Patent' along the top in front of the back-sights, the latter comprising two folding leaf-sights for 100 and 200 yards respectively and each with central gold line, and folding adjustable long range sight calibrated from 300 to 1000 yards and also with central gold line, blued fore-sight, breech flat engraved with foliage at the terminal, border engraved case-hardened breech decorated with a prone stag on the flat and with platinum plug, border engraved case-hardened tang decorated with scrolling foliage, case-hardened border engraved flat detented lock engraved 'Whitworth Patent' and decorated with foliate scrollwork, hammer en suite and inhabited by an eagle and serpent, a blued safety-catch in front, highly figured half-stock (minor scratches on the side-flat) with chequered grip and fore-end, the latter with dark horn cap, border engraved case-hardened steel mounts decorated with scrolling foliage and comprising butt-plate with pineapple-shaped finial, circular hinged patch-box cover engraved with a stag pursued by a hound in a landscape within a border of scrollwork, vacant silver escutcheon, engraved sling button, and retaining virtually all its original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case (one compartment with minor damage) retaining the compartment covers each with bone knob, and with accessories including G. & J.W. Sporting Rifle With Telescopic SightBy John Dickson & Son, 63 Princes Street, Edinburgh, No. 1406 For 1850With browned damascus twist barrels signed along the sighting rib at the breech and each rifled with eleven bright spiral grooves, blued folding leaf back-sights (one missing) from 60 to 180 yards and each with central gold line, and mounts for the original hand-detachable telescopic sight, border engraved case-hardened breeches each with engraved platinum plug and decorated with an eagle on the flat between, border engraved tang engraved with scrolling foliage, signed case-hardened flat detented locks and dolphin hammers each decorated en suite within borders of ropework, the former serial numbered on the inside and stamped with initials 'IB' for Joseph Brazier, the latter with blued safety-catch in front, highly figured half-stock with chequered pistol-grip and fore-end, steel mounts comprising chequered butt-plate decorated with scrolling foliage and a roe buck in a landscape on the border engraved heel tang, case-hardened grip-cap engraved with scrolling foliage, trigger-guard retaining some blueing on the inside and decorated with a stag and a hind in a landscape amid scrolling foliage on the bow, case-hardened trigger-plate with long finial decorated with foliate scrollwork, rear ramrod-pipe with pineapple-shaped finial en suite, circular case-hardened patch-box cover engraved with a prone male lion in a landscape within a foliate scroll border, foliate scroll engraved sling button with knurled edge, grooved forward trigger, silver escutcheon engraved with owner's crest and elaborate monogram, original brass-mounted ramrod, and retaining most of its original finish: in original brass-mounted oak case fitted and lined in tooled pigskin (minor old marks) with accessories including browned twist telescopic sight signed in full along the top and with leather-mounted eyepiece, brass-mounted powder-flask, circular brass percussion cap dispenser, serial numbered steel bullet mould and sprue-cutter, patch-cutter, lift-out tray fitted for turnscrews, cleaning tools (two replaced, one blade missing) and T-shaped combination tool, mallet, the head faced in leather, and turned circular wooden boxes, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle engraved with owner's name 'R.H. A South East Asian betel nut box with chatelaine silver coloured metal, the rectangular box with canted corner and repousse and engraved decoration, with a lidded lime pot and three tools, the main box, 8.6cm long, two spherical betel nut boxes, a cylindrical lime box and needle, another bullet shape, a pipe with tobacco case, a Burmese dha, three necklaces, three belts, a headband, three ornaments, two fruit shape boxes, a pair of condiments modelled as birds, two pepper pots and a cat collar.
