This captivating 17th-century handcolored engraved map, titled Geographische beschryvinge van de Wandelingen der Apostelen ende de Reysen Pauli, is a masterwork by renowned Dutch cartographer Jacob Savry. The map, crafted with exquisite detail and artistry, chronicles the Mediterranean region, depicting the travels of the Apostles, particularly the missionary journeys of St. Paul. Jacob Savry was a Dutch engraver and cartographer from the Golden Age of cartography, a time when maps were not only geographic tools but also artistic expressions of knowledge and faith. This map exemplifies Savry's meticulous craftsmanship, blending geographical accuracy with rich biblical storytelling. The central map delineates the Mediterranean basin, extending from Southern Europe to the Middle East, with remarkable precision. Surrounding the map are vignettes illustrating key moments in the Apostolic journeys, bringing the narrative to life. These scenes offer a visual complement to the map's religious and educational purpose, serving as a didactic tool for audiences of the period. The inscriptions on the map are in Dutch, reflecting the Protestant Reformation's emphasis on disseminating religious knowledge through vernacular languages. This focus made maps like Savry's both valuable cultural artifacts and significant religious tools during the 17th century. Sight size: 19.50"L x 13.75"H. § Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959), Mlle Mijinska's Hands, 1926, bronze, unsigned, presented on a velvet covered plinth with brass plaque engraved 'Epstein, 1926' each approximately 25cm long Sir Jacob Epstein, one of the foremost modernist sculptors of the 20th century, is celebrated for his ability to capture raw emotion and vitality in his work. Among his most evocative creations are his bronze studies of hands, which reveal his mastery of form and his deep sensitivity to the human condition. For Epstein, hands were more than anatomical features; they were symbols of human experience and creativity. His meticulous attention to texture and proportion allowed him to convey not only the physicality of hands but also their emotional resonance—whether as tools of labour, instruments of art, or bearers of personal history. The present lot appears to be a cast of the hands of Andrea Mijinska, a French fashion model and actress. Other similar examples include Epstein’s rendering of model Nan Condren’s hands and the hands of his wife, Lady Epstein. The bronze in good condition, the velvet somewhat faded and worn - the hands sit loosely on the plinth, they are not fixed in place. A Hei TikiThe most valuable hei-tiki are carved from pounam, a green jadelike nephrite or bowenite . Pounamu is priced Māori for its beauty, toughness and great hardness; it is used not only for ornaments such as hei-tiki and ear pendants, but also for carving tools, adzes and weapons.Although hei-tiki are perhaps one of the most recognizable forms of Māori body adornment, their meaning is not entirely known. Scholars have offered a number of theories, including that hei-tiki depict Hineteiwaiwa, an ancestress associated with fertility, or they represent Tiki, the first human. Another suggestion is that they portray unborn embryos or stillborn infants. What makes this particular Hei-Tiki so unusual is the well defined face that is formed by the hollow spaces under the arms as eyes and the legs as a mouth, creating a second mask.11.5 cmProvenanceDonated to Dr. Aaron Bernstein in Morrinsville, New Zealand, circa 1919.
