A painted wooden figure of a man wearing a loin cloth; with short black hair and eyes outlined in black; the body painted in a pink/red pigment; the knees slightly flexed; the arms attached to the body by pegs at the shoulders; the hands clasped and pierced to hold objects now missing. 45 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). Fine condition. From an early 20th century UK collection. Wooden tomb figures were a common feature of Middle Kingdom tomb furnishings where they acted as servants for the deceased in the afterlife. The range of models was extremely varied and included bakeries, farms, granaries and came complete with workers, tools, weapons, and animals; other figures included houses, boats, palanquins and other items for the comfort of the tomb owner in the next world. Towards the end of the New Kingdom these figures were replaced by the more familiar shabtis that carried out the same functions but with less accompanying paraphernalia.
