Attributed to Spoilum (Guan Zulin) - A pair of late 18th century Chinese Colonial reverse painted mirrors. The first mirror depicts a study of an Oriental lady - possibly of noble heritage judging from her silk clothes highlighted with gilt detail - sitting upon a carpet covered rock and playing with a young child. Visible in the background is a coastal scene with buildings on the shore. The second mirror simply depicts the remaining coastal scene together with an oriental style trellis fence. To the right hand side of the first mirror a single hand can been seen, suggesting that the mirrors were once a larger complete piece. Both mirrors are set in antique gilt frames. Visible mirror dimensions - mirror one 14cm wide x 27cm tall - mirror two 14.5cm wide x 27cm tall. 'Spoilum (Guan Zulin), who lived on Painter's Street, had learned the European method of reverse glass painting. By 1770 he was the largest producer of paintings on glass. His skill lay in his ability to execute precise mirror images of engravings brought from Europe. His portraits were said to sell for $10 each. Such reverse paintings can be seen in many fire temples, with themes from the Shahnameh showing kings holding court or in equestrian pose'.
