THEASTER GATES (AMERICAN B. 1973) STACK 6901.1, 2011 Concrete, pulverised glass and carpet Height 125cm (49in.)Provenance: Kavi Gupta, Chicago/Berlin Acquired from the above in 2012Chicago-born Theaster Gates works to uplift underprivileged groups, especially the African-American community, by radically upending artistic conventions. Represented by White Cube, Gates has exhibited internationally; his works can be found in the Kunstmuseum Basel, LACMA, Whitney Museum, and the Tate. His emphasis on collective engagement has resulted in such works as Black Vessel for a Saint, which saw the artist involve local residents in working with repurposed materials, as he does here. Stack 6901.1.2011 owes its title to the date of creation and 6901 Dorchester, a building repurposed by Gates to serve as a filmmaking studio for the African-American community, befitting his commitment to social practice. Gates's explosive arrangement of pulverised glass recalls the property damage that has resulted from recent bouts of civil unrest in North America. The disastrous consequences of these riots reflect fraught race relations: Gates, in his constant effort to challenge institutional biases, is keenly sensitive to this.

Signed and inscribed on a paper strip on the stretcher: `Corfu from the village of Ascension/ painted for Alfred Seymour Esqr by - Edward Lear/ 1857`, oil on canvas Sight 37 x 23cm.; canvas size 38.5 x 24.5cm. Provenance: Alfred Seymour, MP, JP (1824-1888) of Knoyle House, Wiltshire; and later of Trent, Dorset * Lear travelled to Corfu in December 1855 in order to join his `most intimate friend` and judge, Franklin Lushington. He stayed until 1863 and then returned in 1877. Having been swiftly enchanted by Corfu (`it really is a paradise..` he raved to his sister Ann), Lear found much to adore on the island. Early in the Summer of 1856, Lear determined this theme from above the village of Ascension (now Analipsi), looking across to the Citadel of Corfu and the distant but clearly defined mountains of Albania. He later wrote to Ann that 'The whole island is in undulations from the plain where the city is, to the higher hills on the west side; & all the space is covered with one immense grove of olive trees - so that you see over a carpet of wood wherever you look; & the higher you go, the more you see, & always the Citadel & the Lake, & then the Straights, with the great Albanian mountains beyond.' Lear delighted in the pleasing blend of trees, the coastal landscape and the distant snow-capped mountains and he adored the rampant wildness of the olive groves. In June 1856 Lear wrote delightedly to Ann that he intended to devote ‘a good bit of time to illustrating this little promontory for it is… full of interest, as the old city of Ascension (Coreyra) was built on it, ancient coins and marbles are still being found.’ The subject is at once scrupulously realistic and yet imbued with a sense of poetic wonder: Lear was quickly enraptured by splendid panoramas such as this. Lear worked with an exacting and accomplished technique in thinned oil, with no detail proving to be too trivial to be deserving of his meticulous brushwork. The Pre-Raphaelite intensity of his vision was derived in part from his companionable acquaintance with William Holman Hunt from 1852, the two joined on occasions by Rossetti and Millais too. Having worked on substantially larger canvases en plein air, it is possible that Lear developed subjects as ambitious as this on the spot. *CR On Charles Roberson (Long Acre, London) canvas; unlined; some cracking (the paint not lifting or flaking).

Registration - H219 DKHChassis No. - ZFFAA17C000089284M.O.T. - December 2024Odometer - 62,652This marvellous Ferrari Testarossa is a genuine right-hand drive car that benefits from recent work meaning the new owner can enjoy it to the fullest. The vendor reports the work includes an engine-out cambelt service, which saw all fluids and filters being changed, along with the spark plugs. It has also had a complete brake overhaul, with new pads, cables and flexihoses. They say the bodywork is in 'excellent' condition, as are the engine and transmission. Paintwork, interior and electrics are all said to be in 'good' condition too, with the vendor reporting just a couple of stone chips around the bonnet, and a little wearing in the carpet heel area.Interestingly, detailed records supplied with the car show it was originally chosen to be delivered in white, with a blue interior. The first owner then decided, in early 1991, to change the order to the Rosso Corsa red car with crema leather interior you see here. Many will agree this was a very wise decision, and such documentation helps provide a fascinating record of the car’s history. It was delivered on 17 May 1991 and the vendor has owned ‘H219 DKH’ for nearly 10 years. The Veglia Borletti odometer today reads just 62,652 miles. The Ferrari Testarossa was a bona fide poster car of the 1980s, celebrating the excesses of the decade in iconic style. Launched in 1984 to replace the Berlinetta Boxer, the ultra-wide Testarossa, with its unmistakable side strakes and jaw-dropping stance, became an instant Ferrari icon. It soon found fame on TV in Miami Vice, and also became the star of Sega’s arcade video game, Out Run. This helped it be a supercar sales success too, with nearly 10,000 made over a 12-year lifecycle. With a giant 4.9-litre V12 providing the towering performance to match its standout style, the Ferrari Testarossa was an instant classic that remains a cultural icon even today. In summary:Iconic Ferrari Testarossa in classic Rosso Corsa redRecent engine-out cambelt changeOdometer reads just 62,652 miles
