Fine Signed Hereke Carpet North East Anatolia The raspberry field richly decorated with an allover design of cloud bands, palmettes and leafy vines within floral borders flanked by guard stripes, 376cm by 280cm See illustration The Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecit set up workshops for the production of weaving in the town of Hereke during the mid 19th century. The weavers, who were mainly Armenian, initially concentrated on the production of very fine quality silk rugs and it was only later during the last two decades of the 19th century that the royal workshops began producing fine large scale carpets knotted in wool. Early weavings were probably made exclusively for the Sultan`s personal use. The design of this example is like many, based on classical 17th century pieces. It dates from the 1890`s and is an excellent example of fine quality carpets made in the town. Such examples are now rare and collectable.

Fine and Unusual Nain Silk Rug with Wool Highlights Central Persia The ivory field depicting hunting scenes within a verdant landscape of trees and flowering plants enclosed by floral borders and similar guard stripes, 261cm by 152cm See illustration Carpet production in Nain began relatively recently (during the 1940`s). However, in the 1950`s the town became famous for the quality of its production, often making finely knotted rugs piled in soft lustrous wool on a cotton foundation. Silk was frequently used to highlight small design features. This rug is interesting and highly unusual in that approximately 90% of the rug is piled in silk and the small design features are knotted in wool. This would suggest that the rug was woven as a one-off special commission rather than a production piece.

A large "Kirman" designed carpet with all over floral design on a cream ground, bears label inscribed "Karastan, American Finest Power Loomed Rug" and retailed by John Crossley & Sons Ltd of Halifax, 340 x 420cm. CONDITION REPORT: A few minor stains, otherwise appears good with no further obvious signs of faults, damage or restoration.
