A large early 20th century Sarouk style carpet, the central claret red pendant medallion on a pale green field with all over floral decoration, spandrels and fringes, within a conforming claret red, pale blue and buff border, 160 x 127½in. (406.5 x 324cm.), some fading. * Some wear to pile to both ends and some fading to colour to majority of carpet (there are areas to one side and one end which have been beneath sofas and the colour here is slightly stronger). Two lines of flattened pile to one side from a piece of furniture and a few small spots of moth damage to pile around this area.

Incuding Axminster carpet from the Industrial arts of the Nineteenth Century (1851-1853) by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, 'Specimen of Indian Lac Work', 'Indian embroidery on Crimson Silk', Axminster carpet by Watson Bell & Co. A pair of fine Oriental rugs, the central panel set with floral decorated circular medallion on a red ground with floral sprays, within a stepped green, blue and cream floral decorated border, each approx 193 cm x 124 cmCondition ReportAn area of discolouration to the main central medallion as well as fading throughout and some other small marks on one carpet. Fringing worn particularly to one end. The other one - again one end is lacking fringing. Otherwise both have general wear and tear to include some discolouration and fading throughout. A TABRIZ CARPETapproximately 365 x 271cmCondition Report: Overall some cotton weft slubs visible to the carpet front in some areas. Some hard to spot over-stitching visible to one area of red on a stylised flower, possibly elsewhere but with quite some looking no other areas are obviously apparent.The edges have been re-worked with red wool double overstitching.The cotton fringes are worn short, in particluar to the corners.Please see additional images for a visual reference of the condition of this carpet.Condition Report Disclaimer
AN ISFAHAN CARPET approximately 338 x 229cm Condition Report: Some wear comensurate with age and use. Some areas of additional wear (see additional images). Some wear visible at the outer edges of the carpet to a relatively minor extent. A relatively small number of visible very thin lines of wear towards one end of the carpet (see additional images) No obvious significant repairs although some small neatly executed repairs are possible.All side edges of the carpet have been neatly bound, this has been done at a later date. A BAKSHAISH CARPET approximately 786 x 558cm Please note, in addition to the main condition report for this lot, it should be made clear that this carpet has been cut in a number of places throughout and reduced in size. The origin is possibly Fereghan. Condition Report: Some wear overall comensurate with age and useVarious repairs and replaced sections in areas throughout. Later re-binding to the longest edges, this is uneven and untidy in areas and with some areas of loss and fraying. Some areas of more concentrated wear. Some generally small areas appear likely affected by old moth and has resultant losses (see images) One corner (approx 30-40cm square) appears affected by damp as is fragile and easy to pull away the surface of the wool. Some other areas may be affected in a similar way. Some incisions/ cuts running from the outside edges of various length, and some in other areas, these have been basically stitched together (see images) likely to accomadate the carpet into a room with a fireplace etc. Some other repairs. Please refer to the additional images for a drawing showing the approximate length of cuts/ incisions to the scale of the carpet, please note this is approximate only and not precise. One of the shorter ends has no tassling and only a flat woven section, with some fraying and loss. the opposing end has tassling and has suffered losses. Some losses encroach upon the adjacent outermost border (see images) Various areas of abrash. Some areas where knot heads are visible through the pile. It is noted that at each corner of the carpet, the meeting of the design of the border meets abrubtly (see images) This might suggest that the carpet has been reduced to some degree although the only clear suggestion of this at one corner (see drawing of stitched cuts. The canvas has good tension and the picture is in plane. In the carpet around the child the paint layer has raised edges along the cracks and is potentially vulnerable to flaking. The varnish is discoloured and uneven. Retouchings in the lighter paint passages have become lighter over time, this is evident on the chin of the servant and the child’s dress.Further provenance: Anon sale, 6th May 1845, Amsterdam;Anon sale, 19th April 1847, Amsterdam.
