Abigail Hampsey Cheek to cheek, 2023 Coloured pencils on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Abigail Hampsey is a British painter and a co-founder of the artist led project Minutes_on. Abigail completed her BA in Fine Art at Newcastle University in 2019 and has recently completed her MA from the Royal College of art (2022). In this time her work has been exhibited at the Holden Gallery and workplace gallery to name but a few. Abigail has also spent time at the British school at Rome being awarded the Foreshaw Foundation Residency and was also the recipient of The Basil H.Alkazzi Scholarship Award at the Royal College of Art. Abigail is also an academic and tutor at Newcastle University where she teaches and a member of the painting collective Contemporary British Painting. Interested in the notion of truth, trickery, the real and the fake, Abigail's work acts like that of the vaudeville stage. Characters, locations and mediums change from scene to scene creating layers of narrative that reflect not only the source of the imagery but also the decision-making process of painting itself. Abigail creates images drawing on her own experiences and memory, as well as art historical and literary sources. She seeks to create her own stories in a new type of narrative painting. With a particular interest in myth and folklore from the North West of England, Abigail's affiliation to place and home plays a strong role in the construction of her work. In turn, the images tell stories that may be neither true nor accurate, but that reflect a personal yet often archetypal narrative. (Nov 22-July23) Exploring for the first time the land of her memories hoping to find her "Home" now within it. "House luck is the luck we bring into the home. The luck we can create, the luck we can wish for and the luck others can give. It is mystical and non-verbal. It's a lottery and not a given. It's an exploration into the desire to have one's own space, place or home. In its simplest form its safe and dry. It doesn't always physically exist. its coins under the corners of your carpet or thrown through the door on new years day. Often times we gaze at others, imagining what ours could be. Its Piranesi in appearance and ever expanding upon our land, yet tricky to possess entirely. It's the luck of the house at the loss of the land. A conversation to start with no end as old as standing strait. An initial scratch of a larger itch, since arriving "Home" that one can't help but latch."   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Spyros Vassiliou (Greek, 1902-1985)Festival, Athènes signé en grec (en bas à droite)technique mixte et feuille d'or sur panneau24 x 35cm (9 7/16 x 13 3/4in).signed in Greek (lower right)mixed media and gold leaf on boardFootnotes:ProvenanceA gift from the artist to a private collector circa 1960.Bonham's London, The Greek Sale, 1 April 2002, lot 78.Acquired from the above sale and thence by descent to the present owner.Athens celebrating the first Monday of Lent is one of Vassiliou's key subjects, considered to be the quintessence of his work and artistic vision. The Monday of Lent marks the passage from a secular period, that of carnival, to a more ascetic and contemplative one, the forty days before Easter. Through fasting people cleanse themselves of everyday mundane thoughts and contemplate matters of life and death, sacrifice and resurrection. This passage is made easier through the feast of the first day of Lent, which combines sadness with hope, yet with a certainty that hope will prevail. There is a definite Byzantine as well as surrealistic quality to this feast, both being captured by the artist. The city seems to float on a golden carpet. The street sellers with their colourful flowers or balloons, the old-time photographer, the horse carriages, the strolling figures are all carried away by the spirit of the day. The impressionistic diminutive pigments give a flickering, micrographic image of the city. Behind the dark mountain the golden Byzantine sky welcomes the kites, which fly free from their cords like birds. Vassiliou never stops being startled, he does not give up on the young child within him. He treasures memories of his youth and shares them with us as a remedy against oblivion. Even the lower part of the work resembles an old mirror that faded as the years went by. Considering the changes in the city's character, Vassiliou's works were almost prophetic. In 'Lights and Shades' he says about the demolition of old houses: '...the salvage remnants of the demolished house laid out on the pavement for sale, at least have something in them to remind us of the human pulse of a city that has lost forever its face and its soul'.Vassiliou creates an 'enchanted city' with face and soul, which accepts the inevitable with dignity. As Haris Kambouridis has noted: ' Vassiliou is a genuine creative artist who combines technical mastery, effective composition, inspirational flair and a talent for self-expression, qualities which have established him as one of the most important Greek artists of this century.' (Haris Kambouridis, Craftsmanship and the human scale in the work of Spyros Vassiliou, Zygos magazine, 1983, vol. II Annual, p.60)This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU. Lot 49

After Frans van Mieris,  Dutch 1635-1681- A woman standing before a mirror; oil on panel, 33.4 x 27.6 cm. (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work appears to be a copy, in reverse, after Van Mieris's original, which is held in the Leiden Collection [FM-121]. The theme of a lady at her toilette is one that often featured in the paintings of Van Mieris and his contemporaries, such as Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681) and Gabriel Metsu 1629-1667). This subject allowed these artists to exhibit their significant technical proficiency, particularly in the depiction of a range of surfaces and fabrics, from the shimmer of satin and pearls to the fur and velvet of the lady's cape, and the weave of the carpet on the table.

Lot 80

Giuseppe Signorini,  Italian 1857-1932- An Introduction; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and inscribed 'Giusep. Signorini / Paris' (lower right), 53.5 x 82.3 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work is a particularly striking and finely executed example of Signorini's work. He was heavily inspired by the output of fellow Orientalist artists, including Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), and Marià Fortuny (1838-1874).  Signorini's depictions of lavish interiors are notable for their meticulous attention to detail, exhibiting his prodigious skill as an artist, and his ability to render rich textiles and glimmering jewels with significant realism. This virtuosity is strikingly evident in the present work, and can be appreciated in details including the folds of the carpet towards the lower edge, and the minutely applied spots of white used to evoke the shimmering buttons and beads which adorn the clothes of the bowing couple to the right.
