These are the remains of one of the most beautifully coloured Ushak rugs of this type we have seen; ivory ground examples would seem to be of especial rarity.

A good Ningxia carpet, west China mid 19th century, 9ft.9in. x 6ft.5in. 2.97m. x 1.96m. Slight even wear overall, slight staining, some creasing with slight worn kinking. Compare Lorentz, A View of Chinese Rugs, pl. 43, a carpet with a very similar arrangement of motifs, including the Daoist sword and flute emblems and the square vases with hanging lamps on poles behind them, which Lorentz (p. 96), somewhat fancifully perhaps, describes as brush pots with halberds, a pun on wen wu (civil and military).
