After Frans van Mieris, Dutch 1635-1681- A woman standing before a mirror; oil on panel, 33.4 x 27.6 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to be a copy, in reverse, after Van Mieris's original, which is held in the Leiden Collection [FM-121]. The theme of a lady at her toilette is one that often featured in the paintings of Van Mieris and his contemporaries, such as Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681) and Gabriel Metsu 1629-1667). This subject allowed these artists to exhibit their significant technical proficiency, particularly in the depiction of a range of surfaces and fabrics, from the shimmer of satin and pearls to the fur and velvet of the lady's cape, and the weave of the carpet on the table.
Giuseppe Signorini, Italian 1857-1932- An Introduction; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and inscribed 'Giusep. Signorini / Paris' (lower right), 53.5 x 82.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a particularly striking and finely executed example of Signorini's work. He was heavily inspired by the output of fellow Orientalist artists, including Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), and Marià Fortuny (1838-1874). Signorini's depictions of lavish interiors are notable for their meticulous attention to detail, exhibiting his prodigious skill as an artist, and his ability to render rich textiles and glimmering jewels with significant realism. This virtuosity is strikingly evident in the present work, and can be appreciated in details including the folds of the carpet towards the lower edge, and the minutely applied spots of white used to evoke the shimmering buttons and beads which adorn the clothes of the bowing couple to the right.
