The aubergine field with all over dyrnak guls quartered in pale blue and dark blue with pale yellow details; ivory main border of stepped medallions down each long side changing to the ovadan (curled leaf) motif at each end within narrow guards of tiny florets; each wide elem with diagonal rows of stepped medallions with contrasting centres. A most attractive carpet with splendid colour range in a soft palette. Velvety wool and soft palette.

Caucasian 'Kuba blossom' carpet fragment woven with the Afshan repeat pattern, second half 18th century, 11ft. 11in. X 7ft. 7in. 3.63m. X 2.31m. Overall even heavy wear; reduced in length at both ends; with joins, repairs and repiling entirely consistent with a carpet of this age. All over Afshan design on a dark blue field with a pale yellow floret border. Literature: Ellis, Charles Grant, Early Caucasian Rugs, p. 88 pl. 29 for an almost identical fragment; Bennett, I. Op.
