Lot No: 2 - Ref No: 022 Wet and Dry By Robin Armstrong Summer Holiday Home: Yelverton Carpet Company Robin was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire in 1947 he grew up in North Kent. He was introduced to wildlife from a young age and drawing started his career as a junior in a London commercial art studio. As time went by his obsession with wildlife and art grew and he moved to the West Country in 1969 and took up full time painting and drawing firstly living with Ewan Clarkson (writer) and his family near Newton Abbot. He had several successful exhibitions in and around Dartmoor, this was followed by the publication of five books including the bestselling 'Painted Stream' life of a River Warden, a job he did for ten years, looking after the River Tavy and Dart, here he gained much knowledge and first hand observation of Otters in their natural environment. "It goes without saying that the success of my 2017 Moor Otter 'Ripple' will have influenced the follow on design for Otter and Cub 'Wet and Dry' which illustrates the amazing transformation of our European otter as it deals with life both in and out of the water! In the model the female is decorated showing the fine hairs formed into little wet spikes repelling the cold water and allowing the insulating under fur to remain dry and warm, all that is required when the otter exits the river is a good hearty 'shake' and all is good. Some otters can vary in colour from the norm and young cubs are primarily fatty until the guard hairs are properly grown, some otters will play for hours in the highly oxygenated water without getting the inner fur wet." This Otter is a 'Golden Otter' - one that has been specially selected by a panel of expert judges as being particularly stunning. Of the 81 Moor Otters there are only 25 Golden Otters. These Golden Otters will take their online bids to the live auction on Saturday, 2nd October 2021 at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood, Okehampton St, Exeter. You can continue to bid on these otters at the live auction in person or online.

Lot No: 31 - Ref No: 013 Lady Lutra, her Cub and the Starlings By Faith Chevannes Faith is from the Tamar Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty on the west edge of Dartmoor. She works from her Cornish studio making small editions of exquisite drypoint etchings and mixed media pieces. She is fascinated with nature and the ever-changing seasons. The Tamar Otter park is nearby where you can see families of otters close up feeding and playing in their holts. The area has a stunning network of tiny perfect ancient lanes, rivers and bridges which are bounded by high hedges growing a rich flora, unique landscape and wildlife habitat. Lady Lutra has been given the name 'Lady' because she is covered in a 'Lady Fern' design and 'Lutra' because 'Lutra Lutra' is the Latin name for the European Otters which live in this area. The design inspiration is from the river habitat of the otter during the autumn months. The floor is a beautiful rich carpet of golden leaves and there is an abundance of ferns, especially lady ferns in different stages of preparing for winter. The autumn fern colours are perfect browns, mustards, yellows and greens and these have been illustrated in the fern design. Lady Lutra and her cub have gorgeous long eyelashes and whiskers. Lady Lutra is shown with an 'otters crossing' road sign reminding drivers to be ever aware. A flock of starlings fly overhead chatting away before they head to the moorland to make their murmurations and roost.
