Shako Storage Tin Attributed to Brigadier General James Lochhead Jack DSO & Bar, Who’s Detailed Diaries Kept During the Great War Were Published in the 1960’s, standard metal storage tin which would have at one time stored his Cameronians shako. Brass plaque to the lid of the tin bears his name and regiment. Also included is a foul weather cover. Some dents and wear to the shako tin. Born in Paisley, Scotland in 1880. His father was a carpet manufacturer and owned a business in the town. He began his Military service with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1898. He rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant and served with the regiment during the Boer War. At the outbreak of the Great War, Jack was serving as a Staff Captain with the 19th Infantry Brigade and took part in many of the early engagements in 1914. In June 1915, he was appointed to command a company of the 2nd Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), he served with this regiment during the actions on the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme. After the battle he was appointed to command a battalion of the West Yorkshire regiment, it was with this regiment he was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for gallantry. He continued to serve during the Great War with distinction, returning to the Cameronians in 1918 and was awarded a bar for the DSO for gallantry in the field during the closing stages of the war. He continued to serve in the army after WW1 and retired with the rank of Brigadier General. A print out history of Brigadier General Jacks life accompanies this item.
