Overall uneven wear small areas of damage two or three small repairs foundations a little brittle in centre. In both colour and design this represents one of the best known and distinctive group of East Turkestan carpets; several almost identical examples have been published woven either in silk or in wool as here; probably the best known example is the one published by Bidder Carpets of Eastern Turkestan dust jacket and pl.1.
Main Carpet by the Basseri tribe of the Khamseh Confederation Fars province south west Persia about 1900 9ft.11in. x 5ft.9in. 3.02m. x 1.75m. A good Baluchi main carpet Khorasan north east Persia or Adraskand Valley west Afghanistan second half 19th century 8ft.11in. x 6ft.5in. 2.72m. x 1.96m. Small crude reweaves lower right field and lower left inner border very slight loss right edge; small areas of wear dark brown corroded in places. Like the best old rugs of this type this example has an exceptional palette Ð dark blue mid blue green red aubergine dark brown pale yellow ivory.
An attractive Amritsar carpet north India early 20th century 16ft. x 11ft.9in. 4.88m. x 3.58m. Slight wear in places some repairs to fringes at either end. Like many Indian carpets this example uses a well-known Persian tribal design in this case a version of the so-called ‘pomegranate’ lattice found on a distinctive group of Khamseh carpets from Fars.
An attractive and unusual European carpet possibly English early 19th century 14ft.2in. x 12ft.6in. 4.32m. x 3.80m. Even wear overall holes and areas of damage losses. The structure of this carpet indicates a European origin but the design is clearly based on an Indian design with one particular element the blue and ivory curving motifs described as resembling racemes of wisteria blossom being specifically associated with Moghal Indian carpets; however the overall scheme as well as some of the smaller floral elements and in particular the soft palette seem European.
An attractive Sav-onnerie carpet France late 19th-early 20th century 9ft.10in. x 13ft.9in. 3m. x 4.19m. Given the symmetric nature of the design and the thick pile in perfect condition the fact that the carpet is actually woven in the landscape format makes little difference to its appearance.
