Kashmir chain-stitch rug, north India about 1950, 6ft.8in. x 4ft.3in. 2.03m. x 1.30m. This is a very accurate copy of one of the pair of carpets attributed to the town of Brody in Poland assumed to have been woven in the early 18th century. One of the pair is in Wawel Castle, Cracow, Poland, and the other, the famous Sarre carpet, was formerly in the Bernheimer Collection; the latter has been illustrated many times from the early 20th century onwards, hence this Indian copy. For a discussion of the original and a colour reproduction, see Faraday, American and European Carpets and Rugs (1990 ed. Ian Bennett), pl. LXXV, p. 251.
Karabakh carpet, south west Caucasus, early 20th century, 9ft. x 4ft.10in. 2.75m. x 1.47m. Slight wear in places. Together with a Surahani rug, Kuba , north east Caucasus about 1900, 4ft.11in. x 3ft.2in. 1.50m. x 0.97m. Overall even wear. And two other Kuba rugs, north east Caucasus, both about 1900, 4ft.3in. x 3ft.1in. 1.30m. x 0.95m. and 4ft.1in. x 3ft. 1.30m. x 0.90m. Both with even wear. Sold as a collection with all faults not subject to return. (4)
An attractive and finely woven European carpet in French 18th century taste, probably Austria, early 20th century, 17ft.10in. x 13ft.1in. 5.44m. x 3.99m. Carpets of this type were made in several European centres as well as in factories in New York State and elsewhere in the United States in the early years of the 20th century. This example is of exceptional quality, with a fine, regular weave and an intricate design of considerable beauty. Vienna seems the most probably source.
Donegal carpet, Ireland early 20th century, 15ft.3in. x 9ft.1in. 4.65m. x 2.77m. Small chunk missing upper right side and lower right corner, small hole lower left side, some discolouration to ground. This carpet was made without borders, as demonstrated by large sections of original selvedge both sides. However, the construction is odd, apparently consisting of four squares, two at each end, joined to a wide central section; there is no indication from the design that the carpet has been reduced in size.
