Lot 109
Hand knotted carpet fragment, now a runner, Wilton, England, circa 1870 14ft. x 2ft. 4in. 4.27m. x 0.71m. Note the yellow ground with all over floral sprays. All edges overcast in wool. Provenance: This runner has been taken from a large Wilton carpet specially commissioned to fit the library extension, which featured a bay window, at Newton Surmaville House near Yeovil, Somerset which was completed in 1870. The carpet would therefore have been ordered around 1868-69. It was woven at the Wilton Carpet Company at Wilton in the Yates period 1835-1900. The company was acquired by the Earl of Pembroke at the turn of the century from his country seat at Wilton House when the company became known as The Royal Wilton Carpet Company. The carpet was almost certainly woven on an Axminster loom – the looms having been moved from Axminster to Wilton in 1835. The carpet had been unexposed to the light as the Library had been closed to protect the books. The carpet was re-modelled in recent years and cut down in size to a conventional oblong format; this accounts for the remnant we have here with the pile and pattern being ‘sideways-on’.
Lot 123
Two impressive hand knotted carpet fragments now made into two runners with added fringes. Axminster or Wilton, England, 10ft. 6in. x 2ft. 6in. 3.20m. x 0.76m. And 10ft. 1in. x 1ft. 9in. 3.07m. x 0.54m. Note: By repute these fragments were part of a much larger carpet. It has not been possible to establish which house the original carpet was made for but it is known that the top designers and architects in the second half of the 18th century commissioned high quality carpets and rugs from the Axminster workshop of Thomas Whitty (1713-1792). In 1835 the Axminster looms were moved to Wilton. See note to Lot 109 in this sale. As in Lot 109 the pile and the design of these runners is ‘sideways-on’. (2)
Lot 160
Spectacular and massive Agra carpet, north India, last quarter 19th century, 40ft. x 16ft. 7in. 12.20m. x 5.06m. The deep ‘agra’ crimson red field with an all- over lattice design of cloudbands and floral palmettes within linked arabesques, reciprocal green and ivory trefoil inner guards; beautifully shaded dark blue to deep aquamarine main border of flowers and palmettes. Condition: Areas of wear and corrosion in places; heavier wear on left hand side edge of field and border down to foundation in some places; slight surface stains; small holes and crude repairs centre field towards top end of field; 1ft. 3in., 38cm. square repair to right side of field just below centre of carpet.
