A mid-20th century Chinese blue ground Peking carpet decorated with Fen etc. (245cm x 155cm)The carpet although it has been trodden on and used appears to be in very good original order with no big tears or repairs or no pile or low pile. We can see any oil spills on it. One of the corners is a little frayed as per images. This has come privately and in the auctioneer’s opinion is in good general overall condition commensurate with age and usage. There are some slightly darker parts to the cobalt central rectangular ground which may just be in the pile. Overall a good carpet in good general overall condition.
A south-west Persia Qashqai rug of very fine quality; circa 1880, decoration of stylised trees and flowers against a rust ground (260cm x 159cm)Condition is generally commensurate with age. There appears to be no major problems to the main carpet, there are one or two very small minor repairs and there are several small repairs around the very edge of the carpet and border. These are mostly picket up by new tufts/tassels. See images. Otherwise generally looks in good honest in good original condition with no major problems noted. Colours appear to be quite good although there is several thin bars of carpet that appear to be joining up the rest of the design and these bars go “across” the original pattern underneath.
A south-west Persia Qashqai rug; circa 1880, with stylised trees and flowers within blue and cream borders (243cm x 170cm)Overall the carpet looks to be very similar with a small split at one end of the border (see image). Some e=general wear but no real problems pile wise or stain wise. There are one or two “repairs” around the edge of the carpet. The main carpet looks fairly good.
A silk cashmere rug; central circular medallion surrounded by tigers and other animals, the border similarly decorated with stylised repeating patterns of animals etc. (worn) (180cm x 117cm)The carpet is not without faults. It has some staining at some stage and there is some discolouration, old repairs and a small hole at one end. A square section away and some wear etc. Lots of images taken but not in the best of condition.
An early 20th century silk cashmere rug; with cobalt-blue ground and central medallion against a terracotta ground (223cm x 154cm)We can’t see a yellow stain on the rug but it has been very well used and it is noted that one end before the borders is noticeably redder at the other end therefore the Auctioneer thinks it has probably been in the sun. There does appear to be a colour differentiation on the central medallion. Also at one the border is much darker than at the other end. This carpet is not consistent colour wise.
A large and exceptional north-west Persia carpet (signed to one end); central four-point multicoloured medallion flanked by two further similar sized medallions with cobalt-blue borders, all within a red field with various flowers and trees as a 'Garden of Paradise' design, two vertical ivory panels flanking and within various sized and multicoloured borders, the larger cobalt-blue border with scrolling vine motifs (601cm x 357cm)This exceptionally large hand knotted carpet appears to be in reasonable order coming from the main Cotswold country house clearance. Signed at one end, some of the tasseling is away at the ends. Colours look quite good on first inspection and the pile appears to be quite high and relatively unworn. See images. Overall appears to be in quite good condition with no major problems noted.
Henri Matisse (1869-1954)Nu assis à la chemise de tulle (Duthuit 465) Lithograph, 1925, on chine laid paper, signed and inscribed 'essai' in pencil, a rare proof aside from the edition of 50 (Duthuit records only one trial proof of this subject), the full sheet with deckle edges at top and below, in good condition, framedImage 368 x 270mm. (14 1/2 x 10 5/8in.); Sheet 561 x 376mm. (21 3/4 x 14 3/4in.)Footnotes:Without voluptuous pleasure, nothing existsHenri MatisseNowadays we associate Matisse with vibrancy and sensuality. No other works exemplifies these qualities better than his 'Odalisques' from the 1920s. Matisse fled Paris after the First World War and move to sunny Nice where he started depicting exotic-looking women in opulently decorated, interior settings. He met a young ballerina and musician called Henriette Darricarère who was to become her favourite model from 1920 to 1927 and the sitter for his famous Odalisque paintings for this decade. It is said that Matisse ''liked her natural dignity, the graceful way her head sat on her neck and, above all, the fact that her body caught the light like a sculpture''. In this beautiful lithograph, Henriette is elegantly sitting on a Persian carpet with her naked, curved silhouette resting against a striped wall. The erotic charge of this nude and portrait transcends pure lust, depicting a passion that is not just between two people but between Matisse and the very act of painting and drawing. Matisse keeps the same texture, lavish detail and patterned decorations in these lithographs of Odalisques than in his paintings of the same subject. A vibrant Gavin Morton Donegal carpetearly 20th centurybased on an 1899 design by Gavin Morton and G. K. Robertson, the royal blue field having an all over design of angular vines and bold palmettes in colours interspersed by boisterous floral sprigs framed by a wide ivory border of similar design,560cm x 360cm approximatelyFootnotes:A follower of William Morris, Morton collaborated with fellow artist and renowned architect C.F.A. Voysey, and later G.K. Robertson. Their designs have been lauded as some of the finest examples from the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau design movements. They replaced the more 'orientalist' design motifs with the flowers and vines of Art Nouveau, as well as typical Celtic motifs.Throughout his career, Morton's designs were exhibited in Dublin and London and were frequently published in international magazines, as well as displayed in Morton & Co.'s global showrooms. The carpets were purchased by Queen Victoria, King Edward, the Governor General of Canada's residence, and the White House in Washington, D.C.For similarly designed carpets, please refer to Malcolm Haslam, Arts & Crafts Carpets, London, 1991, figs. 67, 68, 69 and 70.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. WIHARSO, ENTANG1967 Tegal/IndonesienTitel: Feast Table Undeclared Perceptions. Datierung: 2012.
