An interesting Hamadan-Feraghan kelleh, north west Persia dated 129[1-3] AH (1874-7 AD), 13ft.9in. x 5ft.3in. 4.19m. x 1.60m. Overall wear, slightly heavier upper end centre. The carpet obviously suffered from severe kinking down the left hand side and has been cut and joined vertically down three quarters of the length between inner guard and field with one short zigzag horizontal cut through the borders. Unfortunately, the vertical cut has passed through the inscription and date in the top left corner, slightly obscuring the final figure; however the short vertical stroke still visible so closely resembles the way the first digit is drawn that it seems likely to be a '1'. Although the carpet has a very rich palette of at least ten colours and in both design and use of colour (the apple green borders for example) it could not be more typically Feraghan, it has an anomalous structure for a weaving of this origin, including symmetric knotting. Lot 655 a Feraghan carpet of, coincidentally, almost the same date and with similar design and palette, has a much more typical structure and makes an interesting comparison.
Derbend carpet, east Caucasus late 19th century, 10ft.4in. x 5ft. 3.15m. x 1.52m. Overall wear, heavy in places with damage, slight losses to sides and ends. And a Yuruk (Kurdish) runner, east Anatolia about 1900-20, 11ft.5in. x 3ft.10in. 3.48m. x 1.17m. Uneven wear, holes, areas of damage, patched. (2)
Abolvardi carpet, Fars province, south west Persia early 20th century, 10ft. x 7ft.1in. 3.05m. x 2.16m. Overall even wear, chemically 'washed'. And an Afshar rug, Kerman area, south central Persia late 19th-early 20th century, 6ft.6in. x 5ft.1in. 1.98m. x 1.55m. Narrow band with heavy wear top end of field
Interesting north west (?) Persian carpet, possibly Sarab area, second half 19th century, 10ft. x 7ft.3in. 3.05m. x 2.21m. Slight wear in areas, e.g. top brown 'frame', small distressed area top left, rust stain lower centre, two radiator cuts lower end. An intriguing carpet with an overall ak su lattice and an unusual palette; symmetric knotting pulled left.
Ottoman silk velvet yastik, Brusa, west Anatolia 16th-17th century 30in. x 16in. 76cm. x 41cm. Heavily worn and with damage. Laid down on linen-covered board with two fragments of 19th century piled carpet and one of needlework. And a embroidered silk apron, English, Queen Anne period, about 1710, 41in. x 20in. 105cm. x 51cm. Shattering to yellow silk ground along folds and along base, the latter with patches. (2)
Yomut Turkmen main carpet, Turkmenistan mid 19th century, 9ft.1in. x 5ft.5in. 2.77m. x 1.65m. Slight even wear in field, small areas of heavier wear, one with slight damage lower left field, stained area upper right side. The variant spacing in the lowest two rows of kepse gols (and the small differences in the internal decoration of some gols) as well as the rich palette suggest a reasonably early date for a carpet of this design type.
An interesting Yomut (?)Turkmen main carpet, Turkmenistan second half 19th century, 9ft.9in. x 6ft.5in. 2.97m. x 1.96m. Slight even wear in field. It is possible that the distinctive dark tonality of this dyrnak gol carpet - with dark and mid blues, dark green, brownish red, brownish salmon, purple-brown and ivory - may be also be a clue to its actual tribal origin, since it also has an unusual structure - asymmetric knotting open left.
Carpet by the Arab Chepanlu taifeh of the Qashqa'i Confederation, Fars province, south west Persia about 1910, 10ft.7in. x 7ft.3in. 3.23m. x 2.21m. Uneven wear, heavy in small areas. And a rug by the Amaleh taifeh of the Qashqa'i Confederation, Fars, south west Persia late 19th century, 8ft.6in. x 5ft.4in. 2.59m. x 1.63m. Heavy overall wear, small patch upper left inner guard.
