A good early Ziegler carpet, Arak (Sultanabad) about 1870, 18ft.8in. x 11ft.4in. 5.69m. x 3.45m. Overall uneven wear, holes and damage with losses in places, particularly lower end border. The rich colour and beautifully drawn arabesque field design indicate that this is one of the earliest of Ziegler carpets; the wide red ground main border is particularly impressive, with what appears to be a sophisticated version of the vekillli pattern associated particularly with Senneh. For another Ziegler carpet of almost the same dimensions with a more rigid version of this border, see Bolour, The English Approach to Carpets, pl. 110.
A good Agra carpet, north India last quarter 19th century, 13ft.10in. x 9ft.10in. 4.22m. x 3m. Light even wear in field, slight heavier both ends. This is a classic Agra jail carpet; the combination of dark turquoise and deep plum red is often found but usually in the reverse arrangement to the one seen here.
