MORTON H.M.R.S.S.A. / KILMARNOCK, with eyepiece, with a replaced curved rack, on tapering supports with vase finials, the mahogany and brass bound base with an extra eyepiece, revolving on a cast iron frame, c.1850, on a later mahogany tripod with leaf carved decoration and block feet, with brass stretcher, the tripod 46.5in (118cm) h. See Brass & Glass, Scientific Instrument Making Workshops in Scotland, pp.190-196. Thomas Morton (1783 - 1862) telescopic making was more of a hobby than a profession, though his interest in anything mechanical was ignited as a child. His greatest invention was the barrel carpet loom in 1811, which improved and developed over the next decades. In 1917 a local banker asked Morton to repair a reflecting telescope. His success was such that `he immediately set to work to construct one himself, and in the sequel to manufacture telescopes for sale.`
