David 'Davy' Law (1907-1951) found international fame by introducing Dennis The Menace to unsuspecting Beano readers in March 1951. Mazlaghan rug and Karaja runner, both north west Persia early 20th century, 3ft.11in. x 2ft.1in. 1.20m. x 0.64m. and 9ft. x 2ft.4in. 2.75m.x 0.71m.Both with overall even wear. A printed label on the verso of the Mazlaghan indicates that it was marketed through Benlian, this being one of the leading 20th century Tabriz families of carpet merchants and master-weavers. (2)
Massive fragmented Ushak 'Fancy Turkey, west Anatolia late 19th century, 24ft x 17ft. 7.32m. x 5.18m. Overall uneven wear, cuts to both long borders with losses right side, cut across top, areas of fading and staining, small holes. It is interesting to speculate how long this carpet, with its brilliant deep turquoise ground colour, might have been when complete.
A most attractive Hamadan-Feraghan kelleh, north west Persia third quarter 19th century, 17ft. x 7ft.8in. 5.18m. x 2.34m. Slight wear in field, small area of damage upper left and centre field including three short splits (probably caused by chairs), very small area of heavy wear with tiny hole lower end inner guard border. The marvellous palette and wool of this carpet and the complete change of both design and chromatic arrangement at the lower end are all indications that this is a comparatively early pre-commercial weaving, probably dating to the 1860s, at which time it is thought to have been acquired by the present owner's grandfather. As with another early (and dated) carpet from the same area (see lot 671), this example also has symmetric knotting.
