Good Tekke Turkmen 4 x 10 gul main carpet, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 10ft. 2in. x 7ft. 6in. 3.20m. x 2.29m. Overall wear and repairs; conservation fabric patches verso lower end. Note the minor ‘chuval’ guls connected by a light brown stripe; complex motifs in the wide main border where the octagons contain the kochanak motif rather than the usual stars; each elem woven with the erre motif. An attractive carpet with good design, colour and soft handle.
Tekke Turkmen 5 x 14 gul main carpet, Turkmenistan, late 19th/early 20th century, 9ft. 5in. x 7ft. 5in. 2.87m. x 2.26m. Vertical cut down the left side outer border the entire length of the carpet. Both borders are almost the same width indicating that only a miniscule amount is missing; perhaps a crease has been removed at some time. Overall wear and some corrosion; small holes. Note the aubergine/plum red field colour; the complex main border including a single row of 3 goats in the left border half way up. Soft handle and subdued palette.

Overall wear, heavier in some places; some repairs; ‘bites’ to both selvedges; several fabric conservation patches verso. Very finely woven with good colour and soft handle. Note the two ivory ground octagons in the border lower corners featuring star interiors and the complexity of the main border. See Jourdain, Uwe. op. cit. p.94; pl. 38 for a similar example. Our piece lacks the wide kelim ends.

Ersari Turkmen 3 x 6 gulli-gul main carpet, south west Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 9ft. x 7ft. 2in. 2.75m. x 2.18m. Overall wear, heavier in some places with holes; losses to lower end; striped kelim turned under at the top end. Note the occasional use of a pale yellow and ivory; the two colourful minor ornaments of star-like motifs in the field and the shades of blue throughout including a light bluey green. See Reuben, David. op. cit., pl, 22 for a very similar carpet.
Tekke Turkmen 5 x 11 gul main carpet, Turkmenistan, first half 19th century, 9ft. 7in. x 6ft. 11in. 2.92m. x 2.11m. Overall wear; heavier in some places; slight loss to lower end; remains of kelim ends; long repair and long tear to centre of carpet. Note the interesting secondary guls each connected with a barber-pole stripe of varied design; the complex main border including octagons, the lower end octagons each containing stars; each elem featuring the kelle motif.
Exceptional north Indian pashmina pile rug, second half 20th century, 5ft. 7in. x 3ft. 8in. 1.79m. x 1.12m. The design a copy of the Ardebil carpet complete with an inscription in an ivory cartouche at the top end. This extraordinary rug has an extremely high knot count and the superior quality of the pashmina wool gives it a shimmering silky pile with a very soft handle. Fabric hanging band at top end verso. Knot count: 660-690 knots per sq. in. approx.; 100 knots per sq. cm. approx.
