Authentic Hand Knotted Persian Rug. 15ft x 10ft. From the information that was provided by the vendor, this rug was imported from Mauritius and took approximately 14 years in making. Vendor paid £27000 including transportation costs 15 years ago. Shalimar / Tabraaz Kashmir is the most beautiful regions of India, mogul rulers were always happy to retreat from the heat of the plains to the cool green heights of Kashmir and indeed Jahangir’s last words, when he died while en route to the “happy valley” was a simple request for only Kashmir. The moguls developed the art of their formal garden style to its greatest heights in Kashmir. One of Kashmir’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly the Dol Lake and of course it’s houseboats. Moguls have not built any palaces in and around this heavenly state. They have built gardens in which they tried to represent all the beauty of the state. The family of artists knotting this Shalimar carpet design have also tried to show the beauty of the state (Srinagar) in their masterpiece design Shalimar. Shalimar garden was constructed by one of the Mogul emperors Jahangir for his beloved “Nur Jahan”. “Nur Jahan” means the light of the world as Kashmir is considered for the whole world. In this design, the family of the weaver has shown the flower vases at the entrance of the garden which denotes the happy welcome to the valley of orchards, and to the formal garden to its greatest heights in Kashmir. Then it represents the greatest attractions of Dal Lake by showing the kanals on both the sides of it. It shows the Dal Lake which is like a vast sea where one gets confused with the Dal starts and where it ends. Weaver has tried to show in his craft the drykes of “floating gardens” which separate the Dal Lake. We can’t see very well in this design of carpet that the family wants to show the Dal is a maze of intricate waterways rather than a simple sheet of open waters. We can also see the trees in the design of the carpet, which tells us that within the lake or two islands which are popular picnic spots - Gold Island (Sona Lake) and Silver Island (Rupa Lake). On both the sides we can find the huge Chinar trees, because both the islands have Chinar trees on them. It has become very famous with us, but very difficult to manufacture many rugs of the same as it takes nearly 4 1/2 years to complete one piece of 10.1 x 5.5 feet. In this design of carpet, if we see minutely, we can find that the family wants to tell us something about the terraces of the garden. During Mogul period the top, most of the four terraces was reserved for the Emperor and the ladies of the court. The image of the mosque is clearly shown by the craftsmanship. It represents the Muslim dominated culture of the happy Valley. It also says us about the famous and biggest mosque of Srinagar build under Jahangir reign, i.e, Jamai Masjid. Birds in the design represent the early sunrise in the Dal Lake. Where whole the Dal opens its arms for the welcome of its admirers. The doll opens by the murmuring of the birds in floating gardens and on the Chinar trees of the islands. The family of design has tried to show the whole scenery of the Kashmir in small sizes. This carpet is handmade/hand knotted. Every knot of the carpet is individually knotted which is clear by the intricacy of the exclusive carpet.
