Frith of the Royal Victoria Gallery (fl 1837-1854) - Silhoutte Conversation Piece of the Kaye family, signed Frith, ink with gilt heightening on cut paper with sepia wash, 29 x 39cm, in contemporary maple frame Literature: A silhouette of two figures by 'Frith 1841', presumably F Frith, has the figures placed on the same pattern of sketched carpet in the foreground. It is illustrated, as is another similar, signed 'Frith 1843' and thought to be by H A Frith, McKechnie (S), British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860, 1978, Nos 570 & 571. The costumes of the sitters in the present example suggests a date of c1848-50 consistent with an old label on the backboard which is dated November 1849. ++A few very small, light spots of foxing; but in excellent condition and undisturbed in the original frame with old label and inscriptions on the backboard. A fine example.
Attributed to William Roberts (1895-1980) - Watercolour study for a larger painting - "The Carpet Beaters" - Group of five figures and a child beating carpets (within red squared grid), 7ins x 5.57ins, unsigned, in narrow painted frame and glazed. Provenance : Thought to have been executed at The Cooling Gallery, Bond Street, London, in the 1920s
