An interesting and attractive Kerman rug, south central Persia late 19th-early 20th century, 6ft.6in. x 4ft.5in. 1.96m.x 1.35m Overall wear, heavy corrosion of tan brown in centre and borders. This unusual rug, with its strong European influence, has a design similar to that of an unpublished carpet recently on the London market signed by one of the great turn-of-the-century ustadi, Ghulam Hossein Kermani.
Ushak region rug, west Anatolia about 1920, 7ft.9in. x 5ft. 2.36m. x 1.52m. Overall even wear, slight damage ad loss to lower end. Based on a 16th century 'Transylvanian' design, rugs of this structure and quality are given the somewhat meaningless nomenclature of 'Pergam' in the carpet trade.
A large and impressive Donegal oval carpet, Ireland about 1920, 23ft.9in. x 14ft.9in. 7.24m. x 4.50m. Slight staining in places. For a large Donegal carpet 'recently made' (i.e. late 1920s) for an English masonic lodge and with somewhat similar main border design, see H. Bateman Faraday, European and American Carpets and Rugs, new ed. 1990, p. 192, fig. 35.
Unusual Yazd carpet, with two inscription cartouches top centre, the uppermost with 'IRAN YEZD' in English, the lower in Farsi Amaleh Hossein Zardeh ('the work of Hossein Zadeh'), west central Iran about 1920, 16ft.8in. x 10ft.1in. 4.08m. x 3.07m. Slight wear and corrosion to black ground, areas of moth damage, mainly lower end..
A rare and exceptional Bakhtiari carpet, possibly Ghafarrukh, Chahar Mahal Valley, second half 19th century, 15ft.11in. x 10ft.10in. 4.85m. x 3.30m. Slight wear, mainly in centre. Both the palette and the all wool and goat hair foundation of this carpet indicate a comparatively early date. The four small landscape vignettes and the various animals scattered among the stylised garden field are pleasing features of the design.
An attractive modernist carpet by Christopher Farr, designed by Sandy Jones (signed with initials SJ lower right corner) and woven in Konya, central Anatolia, modern. 14ft.8in. x 11ft. 4.47m. x 3.35m. Staining in places. Woven from a mixture of handspun wool and mohair and produced as a unique special commission in 1999.
An exceptional Agra carpet, north India second half 19th century, 13ft.9in. x 11ft.11in. 4.19m. x 3.63m. Outer yellow guard missing and small patches top edge, small damaged area with patch upper right field, area of damage and wear lower left side, lower edge slightly ragged. A beautifully coloured carpet with exceptionally fine weave. Ref. Dep.
An interesting and attractive Donegal Arts and Crafts carpet, Ireland about 1890-910, 11ft.5in. x 9ft.4in. 3.48m. x 2.85m. Several splits, some with slight losses, area of moth damage with associated hole top right corner, slight staining in places. The design of this beautiful green ground carpet has not, to our knowledge, been published. An attribution to Voysey, the leading Arts and Crafts designer for the Donegal Factory, while not proven, is certainly a possibility.
