RARE FAMILLE ROSE TURQUOISE-GROUND 'LOTUS' CLOISONNÉ-IMITATION VASEQING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY robustly potted with a globular body surmounted by a tall, waisted neck with a flared rim, the neck flanked by a pair of stylised dragon handles, the body boldly enamelled in vibrant colours with four large lotus flowerheads below bats, interspersed with scattered sprigs of lotus and hibiscus, all reserved on a turquoise ground with a myriad of gilt scrolls imitating the metal wires of cloisonné ware, the neck encircled by a key-fret band, the foot with a stiff-leaf band and the mouth with an archaistic scroll band34.5cm highProvenance:From the collection of the late William Crawford Gray (d.1918); thence by direct family descent.The Collection of the Late William Crawford Gray (d.1918)Gray was founder of the Gray's Carpets Ltd in Ayr, Scotland. By the 1930s, it had showrooms in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Dublin, and Belfast, as well as international representatives in Europe, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Known in the carpet trade for having developed the 'seamless kidder', company founder William Gray was a world traveller and avid art collector in his private life. The Chinese and Japanese artworks from his collection, most notably a massive Kinkozan satsuma vase, a large ivory and lacquer Takarabune and the present lot, all reflect the exquisite taste of the Scottish entrepreneur.

Terracotta field with all over design of large medallions in shades of green, pale blue, ivory, pink, pale apricot, walnut all linked together on a strapwork and floral lattice. Dark blue main border of palmettes in a similar palette; ivory floral guards and plain terracotta outer border. Soft palette and soft handle.

Overall wear; heavier in some places with two fabric patches glued verso at top end; crease marks to right side and losses to both ends. Light terracotta field with horizontal rows of small boteh; ivory boteh vine main border; pale blue medachyl outer guard. Cardinal and Harford, London tape both ends verso.

Overall uneven wear, slightly heavier in some places; small areas of old moth damage; some surface marks and indentations. Pale peach field with central medallion, scattered auspicious objects in the field; pale blue and dark blue T-bar inner border; main border of cartouches alternating with latticed panels; outer dark blue guard of various shou motifs. Velvety wool and soft handle.

Terracotta field with central mid blue medallion; mid-blue spandrels; all over flowers and foiliage; narrow mid-blue main border; pale blue and pale green guards. Symmetrically knotted. Soft palette.
