A fine hand woven wool and silk carpet circa 1900, with five columns of fifteen gulls on a red ground within a multi banded border and tasselled fringe, 340 x 226 cm The Tekke tribe occupied most of the habitable part of what is now the Turkoman S.S.R. (Turkmenistan) between the Caspian sea and the River Amu Darya. They are considered to be the most important of the Turkoman tribes. (1)

Massive Ziegler Mahal carpet, north west Persia, late 19th century, 27ft. 11in. X 16ft. 10in. 8.53m. X 5.13m. Overall wear; slightly heavier in some places; slight losses to ends; 'bite' to top end; hole to top right corner with fabric patch verso;. Magnificent all over design on a light red field within an indigo main border, pale gold, ivory and light red floral guards, all woven in a superb, rich and varied palette.
Tianjin carpet, north west China, circa 1920s, 11ft. 5in. X 9ft. 3.48m. X 2.75m. The salmon pink field completely plain with the exception of a highly decorative pale blue shield in the lower left corner depicting a 'dragon' boat and a single bird, in flight, in the top right corner; deep dark blue border plain except for a pale blue and beige dragon in top left cover and in the lower right corner a similarly coloured zoomorphic motif. Small areas of old moth damage in places; slightly heavier top of field right side.
Mashad carpet, north east Persia, early 20th century, 13ft. 1in. X 10ft. 4in. 3.99m. X 3.15m. Overall wear, heavier in some places; slight loss to top end. All over floral design on a light red field; main border of ivory floral sprays and indigo palmettes on a purple ground. Recently cleaned. Provenance: Purchased for a large Buckinghamshire house in the early 1920s.
Malayer carpet, north west Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, 20ft. 7in. X 11ft. 8in. 6.27m. X 3.56m. Overall wear, heavier in places; corrosion to browns with holes and damage to lower left corner; holes and damage to top right corner; surface marks lower end right side; some colour run. Attractive pale walnut field with all over herati design and ivory farangi gul style main border.
Feraghan carpet, north west Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, 15ft. 3in. x 11ft. 4.65m. x 3.35m. Overall wear, heavy in places, with tears/rips in places; cut for fireplace on left side, replaced with a piece from a similar carpet; other small repairs/repiling; damage and losses to ends. Note the pretty abrashed pale green field.
Impressive inscribed Bakhtiari carpet with rich deep yellow/gold field, Chahar Mahal Valley, west Persia, early 20th century, 14ft. 3in. x 13ft. 2in. 4.34m. x 4.01m. Some wear in places; small repairs. Hessian tape to all edges verso. The main border with inscription cartouche and date 1341(AH) [1922 AD] at the top end which reads 'Farmayesh Agha Nasr Zaman Jaketabi 1341' which translates as: 'By order of Mr. Nasr Zaman Jaketabi 1341' Woven with attractive all-over floral design in a superb range of colour. Large inscribed Bakhtiari carpets in the early 20th century were often specifically made for the Bakhtiari Khans. Lustrous wool and soft handle. Literature: Sakhai, Essie. Persian Rugs and Carpets. Wilton machine made carpet, England, dated 1934 on label verso, 12ft. 1in. X 8ft. 11in. 3.68m. X 2.72m. The label verso reads: Extra Fine Wilton. Colours and pattern ..... Due date 17/02/1934. Woven in four widths joined vertically. Water marks visible verso. Pretty pale blue field with peacock feather design around a central jewelled medallion.
Feraghan carpet, north west Persia, early 20th century, 23ft. X 12ft. 5in. 7.01m. X 3.78m. Overall wear, heavier in some places; holes, repairs and reweaves throughout; repaired cuts in places but the carpet does not appear to have been reduced in length or width. Three light red diamond shape medallions on an indigo field and light red spandrels woven with an all over herati design. Superb subtle palette including a light yellow and a light blue. Purchased for a large Buckinghamshire house in the early 1920s for use in the ballroom/chapel.
Tekke(?) Turkmen 4 x 10 gul carpet, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 11ft. 1in. X 7ft. 4in. 3.38m. X 2.24m. Overall wear; hole to top left side; 'bites' to both sides; crudely repaired crease to left side; other small repairs. Note the Salor type turretted guls often found on Tekke chuvals and the secondary 'chuval' guls; each end panel woven with the dogdan motif; main border of uriuk (apricot blossom) design. Velvety wool and good range of colour. In need of sympathetic restoration and a deep clean.
