An Afghan war rug, circa 1980, the coffee ground field filled with a cow and mosque, surrounded by four mullahs, stylized animals, jets and figures with AK47s within multiple guard-striped borders, fringed, 130 cm x 86 cm #200-300 Note: These rugs were made to commemorate the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1980. And proceeds from them were used to finance the Mujahadeen War by the CIA. 241. A Persian carpet, early 20th century, the field filled with palmettes and flowers against a cream ground within multiple guard stripes, fringed, work, approx. 384 cm x 305 cm
Fragment of a Donegal carpet designed by C.F.A. Voysey in The Rose (subsequently The Inneskeen) pattern, Ireland about 1895-1905, 2ft.3in. x 2ft.11in. 0.69m. x 0.89m. Slight even wear overall. For a complete carpet in this palette, see Haslam, Arts & Crafts Carpets, front dust jacket and pl. 59 and for one in a different palette, see ibid., pl. 71.
Indian rug in Baluchi style, possibly Yeroavda Jail, west central India early 20th century, 8ft.3in. x 4ft.10in. 2.51m. x 1.47m. Square bell-push hole lower end. H.J.R. Twigg, in his A Monograph on the Art and Practice of Carpet Making in the Bombay Presidency, published in Bombay in 1907, specifically mentions the copying of Adraskand carpets in the Yeroavda Jail in Poona; while the attribution of Indian 19th and 20th century carpets to specific jails is difficult, this at least suggests a possible origin for this example. See Ian Bennett, Jail Birds, plts. 23-4, for two other examples.
Feraghan carpet, north west Persia, second half 19th century, 17ft.7in. x 13ft.6in. 5.36m. x 4.12m. Overall uneven wear, small holes, some damage, particularly top left corner. Carpets of this type were imported into Europe, and particularly the United Kingdom, from the late 18th century through to the early 20th century and can be seen in many late 18th and early 19th century domestic scenes; this example could easily date from around 1850.
Attractive Amritsar carpet, north India early 20th century, 15ft.9in. x 11ft.10in. 4.80m. x 3.60m. Uneven wear in abrashed field, narrow horizontal reweave in lower field below medallion, slight damage top edge, two very small narrow splits lower right field and lower left main border. The carpet has predominantly blue cotton wefting (which seems to stop at the two outer plain red-brown 'frame' guards, where it becomes undyed cotton).
Ushak 'Fancy Turkey' carpet, west Anatolia late 19th century, 10ft. x 15ft.6in. 3.10m. x 4.73m. Overall uneven wear, five holes. Reduced in length by cuts across the top and bottom of field; the carpet as presently constituted represents about a third of the original length by the complete original width.
Ushak 'Fancy Turkey' carpet, west Anatolia late 19th century, 15ft. x 11ft. 4.57m. x 3.35m. Overall wear, heavy in places, two fireplace cuts to left side, reduced in length by cut across base of field. Despite its condition, this remains a brilliantly coloured carpet, with a very rare vivid emerald green field and subtly contrasting pistachio green main border.
Attractive Donegal (?) carpet, possibly Ireland early 20th century, 13ft. x 9ft.11in. 3.96m. x 3.02m. Overall even wear, small reweaves. Structurally, this carpet is consistent with Donegal weaving, including the narrow turned-over flatwoven ends; however, both the design and the palette are unusual.
