After studying at King's College London, she returned to Budapest for a traineeship at a handbag company, where she learnt the skills of handbag creation. This led to her becoming the first woman to join the Hungarian Handbag Guild in Budapest. When the Nazis occupied Hungary in 1944, Judith and her family avoided persecution by staying in a residency for Swiss citizens. Before the war ended, she met Gerson (Gus) Leiber; they married in 1946 and they moved back to his native New York in 1947.She worked for various handbag companies for many years, before founding her own company in 1963. The bags she started out making were green leather handbags made from calfskin until a production error took her brand in a new direction. A stained handbag had to be fixed, so she decided to cover it entirely in rhinestones, and her iconic style was born. In 1994, Leiber received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and her jewelled creations have proved popular with First Ladies and celebrities on the red carpet and can be seen in permanent collections across the United States, as well as in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
