Painting of Cyrus the Great, painted by carpet designer Taqi Zadeh, Persian painting on board [Berlin, dated 1919] single leaf, depicting the ruler set against a striking blue background, framed within an elaborately decorated polychrome border illuminated in gilt, small text-block below the image with inscription in Farsi, overall very clean and crisp condition, total 420 by 320 mm. Provenance: This was gifted directly by the artist to the German Ambassador to Iran in Berlin in the year 1919, as recorded in the inscription below the image. Manik Prahbu Maharaj, illuminated painting on card, Sikh influences [India (possibly Rajasthan), last quarter of nineteenth century] single leaf, gouache on card, heightened in gilt, depicting the Maharaja seated on a carpet with a female devotee in waiting, upper edges of image rather creased with chips to paint, framed in blue and gilt border, upper edge of image cropped, 180 by 160 mm.; mounted on paper, tipped onto modern card mount Provenance: From a private northern English collection. Illustration: Manik Prahbu Maharaj (1817-1865) was a Hindu saint and guru whose philosophies, known as the Sakalamata Siddhanta, advocated the unity of all religions. He had both Hindi and Muslim devotees and his teachings were copied in Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, Urdi and Sanskrit.

An antique Persian carpet - removed from a Cambridge College, possibly early 20th century from North West Persia - 8.45metres x 4.33 metres - finely woven with approx 15000 knots per sq. metre - wool pile knotted on a cotton warp foundation with two thin locking weft threads per row, rather hard wool pile cut very flat to give excellent clarity - the rug is in reasonable condition for its age but damaged in some areas, the pile is unevenly worn and several low areas indicate pile corrosion, there are no dramatic colour variations, with old restorations - Provenance - Tabriz is most likely origin of the carpet, nearby Najafabad of Sarouq - There are two similar rugs , The Ardabil, which hang in the V and A museum and one in Los Angeles
