Maharlu carpet, Fars, south west Persia, early 20th century, 10ft. 1in. x 7ft. 5in. 3.07m. x 2.26m. Overall wear; small areas of moth damage; small holes; slight loss to ends.An attractive carpet with lustrous wool, good colour and interesting design features. For a very similar Maharlu carpet see, Parham, C. Masterpieces of Fars Rugs, pp. 222/223, pl. 4/114. Maharlu is situated on the southern bank of Maharlu lake to the east of Shiraz.
Attractive Khamseh carpet, Fars, south west Persia, early 20th century, 10ft. x 7ft. 1in. 3.05m. x 2.16m. Overall wear and moth damage; some creases in places. A carpet with excellent variety of colour including a pale blue and a pale green; note the many interesting features, particularly shrubs in the field and the small animals in the ivory frame to the field.
Exceptional 'Tudesh' Nain carpet, Central Persia, about 1930s-40s, 10ft. x 6ft. 9in. 3.05m. x 2.05m. Note the fine velvety Kork wool; the excellent colour and the beautiful arabesques of flowers around the central medallion, repeated in the main border. Stencil no. 52248 verso lower end; hessian tape sewn to selvedges verso. The fine quality of the weaving and the design of this carpet suggests a possible attribution to Tudesh, a renowned weaver in Nain before the Second World War.
Attractive Kashmiri carpet, north India, second quarter 20th century, 9ft. 10in. x 8ft. 3m. x 2.44m. Some wear in places; reweave to main border, inner guard and part of field at top end of carpet. Note the cartouches of poetry in the main border, the profusion of animals, cloud bands and flowers in the dark blue field around the floral central medallion and the variety of birds in the pale biscuit coloured spandrels.
Khotan carpet, east Turkestan, 19th century, 10ft. 3in. x 5ft. 8in. 3.12m. x 1.73m. Overall wear, heavy in places; overall fading as is typical of these weavings; small crude patch verso; losses to ends. Note the multi-colour Yun Tsai T'ou inner border. Good Yomut Turkmen kepse gul main carpet, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century, 10ft. 8in. x 6ft. 6in. 3.25m. x 1.98m. Overall wear; some reweaves and repiling in places; slight old moth damage. Note the ivory stylized 'boat-type' border, the top elem of erre design and the lower elem of large so-called 'double-headed eagle' motifs. Note also the use of yellow and various shades of pale blue to dark green throughout.
Yomut Turkmen dyrnak gul main carpet, Turkmenistan, late 19th/early 20th century, 10ft. 10in. x 5ft. 11in. 3.30m. x 1.80m. Note the ivory ovadan motif main border; the double-headed 'eagle' motif elems and the tiny random motifs of flowerheads, bird's feet and various other assorted small motifs in the field. 'Bite' to lower right side; small holes; losses to top kelim end.
Yomut Turkmen banded long carpet, Turkmenistan, early 20th century, 9ft. x 4ft. 9in. 2.75m. x 1.45m. Overall wear; heavy in places; crude repairs; colour run in places; slight damage to kelim ends. Attractive Agra carpet fragment of all over floral lattice design, north India, last quarter 19th century, 5ft. 11in. x 4ft. 3in. 1.80m. x 1.30m. Overall wear, heavier in some places. A similar design, though on a white ground as opposed to our 'agra-red' ground, is illustrated in Kennedy Carpets/Ian Bennett, Jail Birds, pl. 16.
