A small wool carpet with an image of Princess Soraya, Iran, mid-20th century, of rectangular form, with fringing to edges, 64 x 54cm. Brought up between Europe and Persia, Princess Soraya was born on 22 June 1932 in Isfahan, hailing from an ancient aristocratic and nomadic family of central Persia. Having seen portrait photographs of Soraya, the Shah was captivated by her beauty and requested to meet her. She was first introduced to the Shah in October 1950 and shortly afterwards they were officialy engaged. During her married life, the Princess devoted her time to many charities. Sadly the marriage was overshadowed by a lack of children and thus the dynasty's future was at stake. Consequently the couple decided to part, although still very much in love and Soraya took leave of Iran in February 1958.Please refer to department for condition report

The manuscript was published by S. Doshi, 'An Illustrated manuscript from Aurangabad dated 1650 A.D.', Lalit Kala, no.15, pp. 19-28, who posited that the patron was serving in the Mughal armies campaigning in the Deccan. This would account for the synthesis of Mughal, Rajasthani and Deccani styles. This Rasamanjari series is very closely related to a Ragamala set of which pages are published in M. Chandra, Mewar Painting, Delhi 1957, pl.7; S.C. Welch, M.C. Beach, Gods, Thrones and Peacocks, New York 1965, n. 18, and S. Canby, Princes, Poets and Paladins, British Museum 1998, no. 127. Both manuscripts are distinguished by their deep and vibrantly contrasting colours. Two other paintings from this Rasamanjari were sold at Sotheby's. 7 July 1975, lots 86-87. Four bidri silver and copper-inlaid Charpai legs, Bidar, Deccan, Central India, 18th century, comprising four legs of Indian charpai (a traditional handwoven bed), shaped as flower blossoms on squared base, rising from the central bud a squared structure, pierced on two sides to accommodate the sticks of the bed, the latter two sides full, the top worked as a blossoming floral bud with lush petals all around, the body clad in copper and silver inlay laid out in a diamond-shaped grid of stylised flower heads, drop-like pattern to the base, 25cm high (4)These charpai legs share a number of similarities with a set of what Zebrowski calls "the slaves of the carpet" (i.e. carpet weights), also known as mir-i farsh (Mark Zebrowski, Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India, London, 1997, p. 131). Indeed, in the Krishna Riboud Collection, there is a set of carpet weights from Bidar, dating to the early 18th century, with exactly the same inlaid diamond-grid floral pattern as ours (ibidem, fig. 160). Moreover, the lower body of our charpai legs, designed as a blossoming flower surrounded by a multitude of petals and standing on a squared base, is virtually the same of the Riboud Collection mir-i farsh, showing the fluidity of motifs and designs on items with different uses. Please refer to department for condition report
