* JAMES MCNAUGHT RSW RGI (SCOTTISH b 1948), MAUSOLEUM OF HALICARNASSUS gouache on paper, signed and dated 1983; titled verso 31cm x 26cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Provenance: label verso The Portal Gallery, 16A Grafton Street, London. Note: James McNaught RSW RGI (b.1948) paints buildings and street scenes, mysterious figures and other narrative elements in fictional combinations. James McNaught was born in Glasgow, the only son of parents who worked as carpet designers at Templeton’s Carpet Factory on Glasgow Green. He studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art and at Hospitalfield between 1966 and 1970. He won the Royal Scottish Academy painting award in 1970. In 2010 he won the Sir William Gillies Award at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. James paints in gouache and watercolour with a delicate touch and a faultless technique. His paintings have an obsessive quality, they are witty and enigmatic and depict a surreal, brooding, slightly threatening world. McNaught has had multiple solo exhibitions in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Munich. His paintings are highly sought after and held in significant private collections worldwide.

A late 19th century wooden and cast metal German carpet train comprising of black, red and green hand painted 0-4-0 locomotive, numbered 285 to sides, and named London, nicely detailed with front headlamps, and boiler door to read 'Berlin, Hamburger Eisenbahn No. 22' (missing chimney); also sold with three accompanying items of rolling stock to include a blue, black and purple lined break van/coach numbered 685 and dated 17/9.1893; together with a GLB open wagon dated 25.10.1893, and a brown, black and blue lined No. 1065 passenger coach, all fitted with nicely cast axles and wheels, some damage to buffers and open wagon has two buffers missing, all housed in what we believe to be the original wooden box

BUCKLEY CECIL W.: (1830-1872) British Royal Navy Captain, Victoria Cross winner for his actions on board HMS Miranda in the Crimea on 29th May 1855. Buckley was the first winner of the Victoria Cross to be actually gazetted. Rare cross-written A.L.S., C.W. Buckley, four pages, 8vo, n.p. (Eton Lodge), 9th September 1841, to 'My dearest Aunt'. The young Buckley informs his correspondent, in part, 'I hope you will excuse me for not answering your kind note sooner but as I have to walk 4 miles to school and 4 miles back every day… I have very little time to myself' continuing to tell of a recent dramatic event, 'At 1 o'clock on Tuesday our house took fire owing to a taper having been left lighted in Miss Fagan's room… her desk, the window curtains, the bed, the bedding, the bed curtains, the dressing table, the washstand, the carpet, and a dressing gown were all burned' further continuing, '…it put in the "Courier" of Wednesday which is the newspaper Mr Benn takes, that our house ("Eton Lodge") was burned to the ground' and concluding with news of a wedding, 'I cannot draw you a picture of the "Scene at the Alter" because there was none. The Bridesmaids, (viz Frances, Julia and Miss Fagan) and the Groomsmen (viz Mr Carson and Mr Miller) all based themselves up in the pews…' With very light age wear, otherwise VG
