Lot 2168
Circle of Giuseppe Cesari (Caviliere d'Arpino 1568-1640) A portrait of a priest painted c. 1592. The sitter is probably Cinzio Aldobrandini before his appointment as Cardinal in 1593. The subject is shown standing with a letter at a carpet covered dais with a bell, book and writing implements. Cinzio was the eldest nephew of the Aldobrandini pope Clement VIII who took office in 1592. The painting bears Clement's papal tiara and the Aldobrandini arms upper left. The seal on the table may depict the crest of the University of Perugia where Cinzio was a student. Provenance- Estate of Gilbert Rodway QC, 39 1/2'' x 49'' approx.

A mixed lot comprising a Midwinter stylecraft Capri pattern vegetable dish designed by Jessie Tout, a 19th Century Continental coloured glass dish with enamelled decoration mounted with gilt metal foot, a Belgian pottery vase, a Honiton pottery jug signed J.B, other vases, jugs, a 19th Century brass candlestick, linen, a carpet beater.

A Persian carpet, the dark blue centrefield with repeating stylised floral and foliate medallions in pale red, blue, cream and gold, within similarly decorated borders, 324 cm x 247 cm CONDITION REPORTS General wear and tear to include areas of weave showing, discolouration.Both ends are missing the fringing in most places. The bound edge also has wear.There is a large section of wear to the lower centre - see images. Overall seems reasonably sturdy, and does not appear to have rotting and does not appear to crack when bent. There are a few areas where the pile is missing - possibly due to moth damage or cigarette burn damage.
