A Qajar portrait of a harem girl, attributed to Muhammad Hasan, Iran, circa 1810-1830, oil on canvas, framed, 141 x 89.5cmProvenance: Acquired by the current vendor from Gordian Weber Kunsthandel, Germany. Acquired from the above 21st October 2015, and kept in London since; Collection Bouvier, Textiles d’Égypte, A Divers, Arts d’Orient, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 26th June 2003, Lot 254The artist Muhammad Hasan was active during the second half of Fath 'Ali's reign, and the first part of Muhammad Shah's reign. He was noted for producing elegant and sensuous paintings of young women such as the present example. A comparable painting also attributed to Muhammad Hasan can be found in the State Museum of Fine Arts in Tiflis, Georgia, and shows a similarly attired maiden kneeling upon a carpet and wearing a dress with a scalloped neck embroidered with roses, and wide-legged trousers with the same scrolling motif. She is clasping a mirror and a jewelled hair ornament, and the painting is executed in the same style. Although inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the signature "Muhammad Hasan" in the mid-left field on the present portrait has been added at a later date, the attribution is convincing, especially in its similarity to other portraits accredited to the artist. Qajar artists are known to have produced numerous portraits of single sitters, and it is likely that Muhammad Hasan would have painted several portraits in a similar style. Another possibility is that the artist may have produced a series of portraits depicting the same sitter, as with the dual portrait of a harem girl in the collection of Sir Gore Ouseley, Ambassador to the Persian court and founder of the Royal Asiatic Society, and acquired directly from a Persian artist in the early nineteenth century (Diba and Ekhtiar 1998, no.57 p.206). The painting displays two almost identical maidens within the same interior that is divided into separate fields by the suggestion of a border at the centre of the canvas, causing Falk to speculate that the canvas is likely to have been cut down from a larger panel (Diba and Ekhtiar 1998, no.57 p.206). This separation, combined with the unadorned canvas that extends beyond the margin of the portrait's background, suggests that artists may have worked on large canvases producing a series of similar portraits. Portraits of maidens and entertainers were often placed in niches as decorative features within a palace, and it is tempting to suggest that an arcade may have been decorated with several paintings from one series. The painting of two harem girls also proves that artists produced multiple versions of certain popular subjects.Provenance: Acquired by the current vendor from Gordian Weber Kunsthandel, Germany. A ruler entertained, Jaipur, North East Rajasthan, circa 1820, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, flanked by courtesans, on an elaborate dais, musicians kneeling in front and servants including flywhisk, pan and mace bearers, standing behind, monumental chandeliers on each side, on a terrace covered with a summer carpet, under a white canopy, laid on card within wide gold and gold speckled dark blue margins with polychrome rules, wide silver and gold speckled borders, the reverse with 19th century inscriptions in black ink, to upper right corner "For dearest Mrs Bowell with .... (illegible) kindest love", one below giving a date of January 1850, numbered no. 9, name of Lady Colebrooke, personal description "Nautch girls performing before a native ... (illegible) for his ... (illegible)", minor scattered losses, a tear to lower left, some scuffing including to lower corners, framed and glazed, 35.5 x 24.8cm.Provenance: Lady Louisa Ann Colebrooke (bapt. 1790-1867) and then gifted to a Mrs Bowell from whom the paintings were inherited. From the dates inscribed to the reverse of this series of five paintings and the early 19th century style in which they were painted we can deduce that the Lady Colebrooke inscribed to the reverse of each painting was the formidable and acquisitive Lady Louisa Ann Colebrooke who married her cousin Sir James Edward Colebrooke (1761-1838) on the 31 January 1820 and passed away in 1867, seventeen years after these paintings were gifted to a Mrs Bowell. Louisa-Ann Colebrooke was baptized in Madras in 1790, the daughter of an army lieutenant. In 1807 she married an army officer Henry Stewart with whom she had a daughter and then married for a second time James Edward Colebrooke, 3rd Baronet, in Calcutta in 1820. Born in 1761, James Edward succeeded his father Sir George Colebrooke as 3rd Baronet and Hereditary Keeper of the Castle of Crawford in 1809. He became Senior Merchant on the Bengal establishment, Judge of Appeals at Murshidabad, and was Resident and Commissioner at Delhi from 1777-1821. He was, however, suspended from office in 1829 'on account of various corrupt practices'. Returning to England, the Colebrookes resided at Colebrooke Park in Kent, and James died in Tunbridge Wells in 1838. Following the death of her husband, Louisa Ann married her third and final husband in 1841, James Bremridge, and she died in 1867 in Horsham, Sussex following an accident and was buried at Southborough in Kent. The British Library contains a letter, dated 24 Oct 1781, from James Edward Colebrooke to his father Sir George Colebrooke, 2nd Bart (1729- 1809), East India Company director 1767-72, describing the rising of Chait Singh, Raja of Benares, and reporting Sir Eyre Coote's recent victories against Haidar Ali (Mss Eur B286).
