Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974)Girl with a Ruff CollarOil on board, 60 x 49.5cm (24 x 19½")SignedProvenance: With Jorgensen Gallery, Dublin, label versoArt historian Dr. S.B. Kennedy reckoned that the remarkable art dealer Victor Waddington, a central figure in the development of Irish 20th century art, “almost certainly” subsidised Daniel O’Neill’s sojourn in Paris towards the end of the 1940s. The stay was vital for the artist. He stayed in Montmartre and lapped up the atmosphere of the culturally rich, economically quite impoverished, bohemian locality. Kennedy notes the influence of two Maurices on his work: de Vlaminck and Utrillo. Their influence is perceptible thereafter in his strongly stated draughtsmanship and bold use of colour.Rather than being drawn into Cubism and its offshoots, as was the case with many other Irish artists who took the Parisian route, O’Neill worked throughout his life in the representational tradition, though with a certain level of flexibility. That is, he wouldn’t be out of place in the context of the English Neo-romantic artists who flourished at the time. He had a good sense for the drama of a composition - at one point he designed sets for Synge’s Playboy at the Abbey. His work is often notable for its wistful, yearning quality, which, together with his great technical skill, has made it particularly popular with a wide audience. Paintings of individual female subjects number among his best works. This timeless painting is one of them. Against a clear, cloudy background, the young woman looks dreamily at the viewer. She seems lost in her own thoughts and memories, a little melancholy, though a smile plays at the edges of her lips. Elaborately, stylishly dressed in several layers and colours, she sports a generous ruff. That, with the rest of her costume, and a certain otherworldly cast to the lighting, tends to place her back in time, through the centuries. O’Neill embellishes fine layers of oil with applications of pure, bright pigment, giving the image a jewel-like shimmer.Born in Belfast, the son of an electrician, he followed his father into the trade, working for the corporation’s transport department and the shipyards. But even in his early teens he was drawn to art, studying books in the library and attending night classes at technical college. At work he opted for night shifts, painting during daylight. He was taken up by the fine painter and muralist Sidney Smith and befriended Gerard Dillon, exhibiting with him in Dublin in 1943. Victor Waddington’s support gave him the chance to establish himself as an artist.Aiden Dunne, April 2023

2005 Porsche 987 Boxster S Transmission: automaticMileage:97702The first generation Boxster (the 986) was introduced in late 1996 and was powered by a 2.5 litre flat six-cylinder engine, many believe the introduction of the Boxster helped save Porsche from acquisition. It was Porsche's first water-cooled, non-front engine sports car as the Boxster is mid-engine, while the 911 has a rear engine. This layout provided a low centre of gravity, near perfect weight distribution and good handling. In 2000, the new Boxster S variant was introduced with a larger 3.2 litre engine and in 2003, styling and engine output was upgraded on both variants. With prices rising the later 3.2 litre S models with manual gearboxes are becoming increasingly sought-after.This example is presented in silver with a black leather interior and black electrically operated hood. It comes with electric windows, stereo, Tiptronic transmission and it also comes with a nice history which includes all its Porsche manuals and booklets. It has a fully stamped service book which is up to date and shows the car has been well looked after by Porsche specialists on a regular basis, with its current MoT test certificate valid until 19th July 2023. Offered without reserve, this represents a great opportunity for some fun on the roads €“ legally of course!

Lot 106

1964 BRA P-Type Transmission: manualMileage:15248BRA Ltd was formed in 1981 by John Berry and Peter Ibbotson for the purpose of designing, developing and manufacturing a limited number of high-quality reproduction sports car kits styled on famous models of the past but incorporating modern mechanics and safety features. All kits featured professionally engineered jig built, MIG welded steel tube chassis, which do not rely on bodywork for strength. The bodies are very high-quality GRP and the P-Type featured an MGB 1800cc engine and running gear. This example was registered new in 1964 and is believed to have been converted to BRA P-Type specification in 1984. The P-Type was acquired by the current vendor 17 years ago and has been used sparingly throughout his ownership, using it on high days and holidays. Having seen little use in recent years, the P-Type would benefit from light recommissioning but can be enjoyed as is and it runs and drives as you would expect. Accompanying the car are copies of the original BRA brochure, MoT online records and the current UK V5 registration document. Offered without reserve this is a very good opportunity to acquire a rather rare BRA P-Type.Interested parties should note that this example will require recommissioning before use.

Lot 129

1994 Jaguar XJS Convertible Transmission: automaticMileage:67500The Jaguar XJS Convertible, which first appeared in 1988, was considerably more than just a coupé with the roof removed. The earlier 'T'-top cabriolet paved the way as the first open Jaguar since the demise of the E-Type in 1975 but this was to be the first full convertible and a strengthened sub-frame was employed in order to alleviate scuttle shake. Retaining the roomy cockpit space of the coupé, the new convertible naturally boasted all the expected Jaguar refinements as standard making for a very fine, open grand touring car. The XJS was continuously developed during its 20 year production life. Today, this model is very much establishing itself as a most worthy latter day classic with good examples being eagerly sought by connoisseurs of the marque. This superb example of this luxurious sports convertible is presented in Regency Red with a cream leather interior, which was re-upholstered in 2020 to a very high standard. The car comes with a black electrically operated hood and both the interior and exterior are in absolutely superb condition. The history file is comprehensive with 19 service stamps and accompanied by two keys. Our vendor has treated the car to ceramic Pro-paint protection. Powered by the smooth six-cylinder 4.0 litre engine mated to an automatic gearbox, this British sports car still looks as fabulous as it did the day it was manufactured.

Lot 137

2003 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG Transmission: automaticMileage:96600The fifth generation of the legendary SL series convertible sports cars was known as the R230. It featured a fully retractable hardtop that was marketed as the Vario Roof, a first for the SL class although it had been available on the smaller SLK model since 1997. The flagship models were built by AMG in the form of the SL55 and SL65, both highly tuned versions of the SL500 and SL600 respectively. The SL55 was powered by a mighty supercharged version of the 5.5 litre, V8 which produced 493bhp and achieved 0-62 in 4.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph (governed). In theory, the SL55 could reach 190mph if the car was derestricted but, for many, the acceleration and top speed is impressive enough in its standard form! The Mercedes-Benz SL55 is no shrinking violet but the previous owner of this car was not satisfied and wanted to attract even more attention. A full wide bodykit was used to convert the SL55 AMG to a recreation of the later Brabus SL65 Black Edition with the help of a professional ADAIR kit. Subject to a light Category D insurance loss in 2013, ADAIR used this opportunity to facelift the headlights and expertly replace the panels with the wide body kit. The car today looks every part its £280,000 plus sibling, a real wolf in wolfs clothing and is described by our vendor as 'an absolute goliath of a car'. We are informed that the engine has been breathed on with the intention of achieving 600bhp, however until dyno tested this is still an unknown. The incredible sound from the exhaust is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end making this an exciting car to drive and own. We are informed only one genuine SL65 Brabus Black Edition car exists and is held in a collection owned by the Dubai Royal family. An AMG supercharged V8 with the roof down is a perfect motoring scenario and so desired by fans of the SL Mercedes-Benz. Offered with a MoT test certificate, this stunning SL will turn heads at every opportunity and will be sure to do the same when offered at auction. The vendor states this the most amazing vehicle he has ever driven, the power and sound make this vehicle truly a one-off beast.

Lot 138 - 1961 Daimler SP250 Dart ‘B’ Specification Transmission: manualMileage:88982The controversially styled Daimler Dart was introduced at the New York Motor Show in 1959 and had its European debut at the 1959 Earls Court Motor Show; the Dart name was soon dropped after the threat of legal action from Chrysler who had a car of that name within their Dodge division. Thereafter this new sports car was known as the Daimler SP250.   Power was provided by the 2.5 litre, Edward Turner designed, V8 that soon became revered for the smoothness in its power delivery with 140bhp on tap.   Independent double wishbone front suspension at the front and half elliptical springs at the rear with a live rear axle kept the car on the road with stopping power supplied by hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners.   The coachwork was constructed with glass reinforced plastic providing a tough, strong and lightweight shape that enhanced performance with exciting and non-traditional looks.   The 120mph plus capability was recognised by the police and they were soon being used as high-speed chase cars.  505 WPU is reported to have undergone restoration in the early 1990's with the body being stripped and repainted in Navy Blue, the interior tidied up and the engine rebuilt. Any other mechanical work required was also reportedly done at the same time. The supplied purchase receipt to the buyer Dr. Jacobs in September 1993, shows the beginning of much care lavished on the car by the Doctor under his ownership, clearly keen to maintain its restored condition. There are many receipts from Classic Automobile Repair Services of Wandsworth, London, under Dr. Jacobs ownership, detailing the care that was given to the car. Amongst these items was the inclusion of fitting a Kenlow fan to aid with engine temperature regulation in London traffic as well as other works such as carburettor rebuilds and steering strip and rebuild. The vendor reports the car to run and drive extremely well, attracting admiring looks wherever it goes.Supplied with the UK V5C registration document and history file. With a desirable low ownership, this rare, early 'B' specification SP250 offers great usability and looks to match.

1969 Triumph TR6 Transmission: manualMileage:84446The Triumph TR6 was produced between 1969 and 1976 and, by the time production ended in July 1976, it was the best-seller of the TR range. In total 94,619 TR6s were manufactured of which 86,249 were sold overseas and only 8,370 were sold in the UK. The bodywork closely resembled that of the previous model, the TR5, but the front and rear were squared off and all TR6s featured inline six-cylinder engines. The TR6 featured a four-speed manual transmission and an optional equipment overdrive unit was a desirable feature because it gave drivers close-gearing for spirited driving whilst remaining an excellent touring car for open motorways. It also featured independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering, 15” wheels and tyres, pile carpet on the floors and boot, bucket seats and a full complement of instrumentation. Braking was provided by disc brakes at the front and rear drum brakes. This handsome TR6 started life as an export model, leaving for the United States on 9th May 1969. A well optioned car, it benefitted from a heater, laminated windscreen, wire wheels and a desirable overdrive gearbox. Believed to have been restored in the late 90's or early 2000's here in the UK and completed to a high standard, the accompanying photographic restoration book shows that the car was stripped down to bare metal before being repainted and rebuilt, as well as being converted to right-hand drive. The car has since been repainted in a different shade of red and has benefitted from additional upgrades which include the refitting of a set of wire wheels, modern tyres, a black hood, Mazda MX5 seats, (a popular upgrade on TR6's that improves comfort immeasurably), a new free flow exhaust system with a six into two manifold and the SU carburettors were rebuilt. The car also comes complete with a chromed rocker cover, pancake air filters, luggage rack, sports door mirrors, tonneau cover and a Moto-Lita wood-rim steering wheel. The vendor reports the car to run and drive extremely well, sounding glorious through the free-flowing exhaust system.Supplied with the UK V5C registration document, BMIHT Heritage Certificate and photographic restoration book. This fantastic example offers pure classic British, hood down, sportscar thrills. Perfect for making the most of the coming summer months.

1960 Triumph TR3A Transmission: manualMileage:55883The Triumph TR3 was built between 1955 and 1962 and was usually supplied as an open two-seater, although an occasional rear seat and bolt-on steel hardtop were available as extras. It was powered by a 1991cc engine which initially produced 95bhp increasing to 100bhp at 5000rpm. The four-speed manual transmission could be supplemented by an overdrive unit on the top three ratios electrically operated and controlled by a switch on the dash. In 1956, the front brakes changed from drum to disc becoming the first British series production car to do so. Because of these disc brakes, the TR3 became known for its superior braking ability, making it an autocross favourite.Presented in red with desirable white hardtop, this magnificent example of the iconic British sportscar boats just three owners in its entire life. Offered with a large history file which contains information going back to 1985 when the second owner, a Mr. Howard purchased the car requiring full restoration. The engine was rebuilt with the crankshaft re-ground and new liners and pistons fitted, along with unleaded valve seats with new valves and new springs. Electronic ignition was fitted and the gearbox completely overhauled with a new clutch for good measure. The front suspension was updated and braided hoses fitted alongside new side screens rebuilt with a matching hood and tonneau. The third owner fitted a front anti-roll bar, and all the suspension bushes were polybushed alongside narrow V-belt pullies (less friction) and alternator. The car then took part in numerous rallies such as the TR Register Pyrenees tour in 1995 and the Millennium Tour in 2000. In 2012, the car was completely stripped and painted by Bristol Classic & Sports Cars in Clevedon. 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT Transmission: manualMileage:25158The Dino, named in honour of Enzo Ferrari's son, was a brand for V6 engined Ferraris and the project that Alfredo 'Dino' Ferrari worked on before he died tragically of muscular dystrophy at just 24 years old. In order to homologate Ferrari's Formula Two entry in 1966, the FIA requested that 500 production cars were produced using the same V6 unit as the race car. The Fiat Dino was born using the two-litre V6 Ferrari unit which was later used in the early 206GT versions of the Dino. Ferrari used the mid-engined configuration that was working well for them in sports car racing for the new Dino and the prototype 206S was shown at the 1966 Turin show. The car drew a positive response and Ferrari put the car into production, making it the first mid-engined production Ferrari. A 2.4 litre version on a longer wheelbase, the 246GT, replaced the Dino 206 in late 1969. The beauty of a mid-engined sports car is the handling, as the improved centre of gravity lends itself to better road holding. A Ferrari Dino has great cornering ability and is an enormously fun car to drive.Originally registered to Mr. P. Thorpe in Woking, Surrey on 7th January 1972 and purchased by the current vendor in May 1990. This car was in a dismantled and poor condition when purchased 33 years ago, with the body having been removed from the chassis in order to deal with a number of issues including corrosion. The vendor at the time agreed to carry out certain works on the car including the bodywork issues and he re-united the body with the chassis. This was progress and at last the current owner had a rolling chassis to transport, along with a vast number of parts, including the engine, gearbox and ancillaries, interior, brakes and glass. Fortunately, the vendor's brother was a former Formula 1 mechanic and between them they spent three years putting the car back together, with the vendor taking care of the interior trim. Originally silver, the car was repainted in Ferrari Rosso Rubino Metallizato (Ruby Red metallic) and was MoT'd in July 1994 showing a mileage of 23,120 at the time. Now displaying a mileage of 25,158, thus this Ferrari has covered 2,038 miles in 33 years. Major work was carried out in October 2008 which included a partial engine rebuild, the mileage being 24,214 at the time.  There is room for sympathetic improvements to be made on this right hand drive Dino 246 GT, which now shows age-related wear and tear. We are advised that the lighting switch on the steering column is a little temperamental. A large quantity of documents and invoices accompanies this Ferrari. Due to the fact that the car has been off the road for a number of years throughout its life, it is thought the mileage of 25,158 could well be correct, although not warranted. It is widely agreed that the Ferrari Dino is one of the best-handling and most gratifying automobiles of the early 1970s; it is certainly one of the most attractive, delicately balanced designs ever produced by the masters at Pininfarina.

1960 Facel Vega HK500 Transmission: manualMileage:90000Founded by Jean Daninos in 1939, Forges et Ateliers de Construction d'Eure-et-Loir (FACEL) originally specialised in the production of aircraft materials. After World War II, Facel distributed car bodies to Panhard, Simca and Ford France. It would not be until 1954 that Facel began to manufacture its own vehicle, the Facel Vega FV, unveiled at the Paris Salon in 1954. Crippling legislation immediately after the war made it was virtually impossible for luxurious cars to be manufactured in France but despite this, Jean Daninos was passionate about reigniting the romance of lavishly glamorous French motoring. Despite the staggering $7,000 asking price at launch, buyers were still flocking to take ownership. Later developments saw the introduction, in 1956, of the Facel Vega FVS, further evolving into the all-new HK500 in 1959. The chosen engine to power the next chapter in Facel history was the most famous of them all, the 383 cubic inch, 6.3 litre, V8, which produced a thundering 360bhp, a claimed top speed of 147mph and 0-60mph time of just 8.5 seconds. Through this combination of alluring styling and significant power, the Facel Vega HK500 legend was born. The media were hugely excited with Facel's latest sports coupé. A 'Mechanix Illustrated' magazine tester, Tom McCahill, said the HK500 was, Sexier than the Place Pigalle and throatier than a Russian basso; A sporting piece of equipment that looks like money, which is exactly what it costs ($9,795 new). A car to be appreciated as a remarkable and wonderfully satisfying road companion.Adored for its charm and style, the Facel Vega HK500 captivated the hearts of the masses, with numerous celebrities taking ownership of this pinnacle of French elegance. Drawn by Jean Daninos himself, the Facel Vega seamlessly incorporates American styling with French glamour. With over 390bhp available from the roaring Chrysler V8, the HK500 was one of the fastest cars of its day. The Facel Vega II replaced the HK in 1962, at which time, it is widely thought, just 489 were built and reportedly only 105 were right hand drive, fewer still manual. On Boxing day in 1995, Mr. Green, the previous owner's father bought this example from the classified ad of a US classic car magazine, it described the car as 'the best in the world' and thus he bought it unseen and wired the $12,000. At this point, the retired Mr. Green, who had wanted a Facel since a boy, had no idea of the extent of the restoration that would be required. However, once the restoration was finished in 1997, Classic Cars magazine said this example was €œthe best in the world €, after a £50,000 restoration it just might be. The story of the restoration is documented in the November issue of Classic Cars magazine and a copy of this can be found in the history file which also includes a breakdown of the costs and the specialists used back in 1996. A staggering £36,000 was spent on bodywork. The car was found to have the incorrect 5.8 litre engine so Mr. Green sourced the correct 6.3 litre Chrysler Typhoon unit from Facel Specialist, Ian Webb, he had this rebuilt and transplanted into this exceptional car to retain the originality. The history file contains countless invoices and receipts for parts and work including help from Hans Ruhe with the fiddly bits and Downton Bodyworks taking on the largest part of the project. When completed, the car remained a family treasure, it was a regular with the Facel Owners Club and featured at the N.E.C Motor Show stand in 1998. Mr. Green transferred ownership of this Facel to his son David who, along with his family, enjoyed taking the car to local Facel meets and car shows, creating new memories with what had been an extraordinary story.Purchased by the vendor from us in 2020, this stunning HK500 has been freshly painted in gold and bronze with opulent magnolia hide and ample chromework. The car, requiring a little attention since it's restoration int the 90's, has benefitted from work carried out by well renowned restoration specialists, The Chelsea Workshop since he took ownership. With invoices amounting to over £48,000 in his three years of ownership, the car has been given a full repaint, interior trim work with new carpets, any issues with the car resolved, as well as the installation of air conditioning, (costing £7,834.00 alone). The car presents beautifully, reportedly running and driving very well.Supplied with several folders full of history, photographs and Facel Vega Owners Club details. The car benefits from a MoT test certificate valid until March 2024. A truly exceptional example with a great history and achingly gorgeous, this is a unique opportunity to own one of the most iconic motorcars of the 1960s and follow in the footsteps of Ava Gardner and Dean Martin, to name a few.
