Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Lovely bronze statuette of Jupiter (known by Zeus to the Greeks who "invented" this god). Jupiter was the god of the heavens and earth and the head honcho of the Roman gods. He is shown holding a lightning bolt in his right hand, left hand raised once holding spear. DICK-CUNYNGHAM WILLIAM HENRY: (1851-1900) Scottish Lieutenant Colonel, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Sherpur Pass, Afghanistan, on 13th December 1879 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Rare A.L.S., W H Dick Cunyngham, Lt Colonel, two pages, folio, Aldershot, 4th December 1897, to the Brigade Major of the 2nd Infantry Brigade. Writing in his capacity as Commander of the 2nd Battalion of Gordon Highlanders, Dick-Cunyngham forwards some sketches (one still present) and reports to his correspondent, explaining that they have been executed by various officers and commenting 'The sketch map showing outposts....appears to be extremely accurate & has been drawn with great care', further praising the topographical points etc., and further stating 'The road report executed by Lt. The Honble. R. Carnegie is neat & correct & the details in the report appear to be very full....The road report & sketch executed by Lieut. Findlay is satisfactory. The sketch very clear, road somewhat broad, & the details in the report satisfactory'. With a further note in the hand of the Lieutenant. Colonel of the 2nd Infantry Brigade to the integral leaf, forwarding the road report by Carnegie and one other. Together with the Road Report by Lieutenant R. F. Carnegie of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders referred to in the letter, being a well executed colour pen and ink drawing of a road and train tracks close to Frimley and Blackwater, with details of the surrounding buildings, including barracks, and land etc., with an affixed holograph report providing extensive details of the road, bridges, rate of marching, towns and villages, water, rivers, halting places, camping grounds, railways etc., close to the road, both the drawing and report signed by Carnegie and dated 23rd November 1897 in his hand. The report has also been reviewed by Herbert Plumer (1857-1932) 1st Viscount Plumer. British Field Marshal. In a holograph statement signed ('H Plumer Lt Col') Plumer remarks, in part, 'Useful sketch & report. The directions of all roads branching from the one under report should be noted. Milestones shd. be stated. Names on the sketch shd. be printed boldly. There should be a scale....' Also including a small selection of other documents and printed ephemera etc. relating to the 2nd Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders including an Annual Musketry Return for 1893 (the partially printed document completed in ink by Carnegie and bearing his signature), an original folio pencil and pen and ink drawing illustrating Highland Games and Athletic Sports of the Gordon Highlanders at the Curragh Camp, printed broadside entitled Interior Economy issued by Lieutenant A. L. Haldane, Adjutant, etc. Autographs of Dick-Cunyngham are rare as a result of his untimely death at the age of 48 when he was killed in action at the Siege of Ladysmith on 6th January 1900. Some light overall age wear and a few minor splits and small tears at the edges and folds of the letter and documents, generally about VG, 6

MOTOR RACING: A good vintage cloth pennant with green borders and bearing the circular emblem of the Nurburgring, individually signed by twelve motor racing drivers who participated at the 1953 1000 km of Nurburgring (being the fifth round of the F.I.A. World Sports Car Championship) comprising Alberto Ascari (1918-1955, Italian Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1952 & 1953; joint winner of the 1953 1000km), Giuseppe Farina (1906-1966, Italian Motor Racing Driver, the first Formula One World Champion 1950; joint winner of the 1953 1000km), Piero Taruffi (1906-1988, Italian Motor Racing Driver), Mike Hawthorn (1929-1959, British Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1958), Luigi Villoresi (1909-1987, Italian Motor Racing Driver), Louis Chiron (1899-1979, Monegasque Motor Racing Driver), Hermann Lang (1909-1987, German Motor Racing Driver), Emilio Giletti ( - , Italian Motor Racing Driver), Robert Manzon (1917-2015, French Motor Racing Driver; accomplished the fastest lap of the 1953 1000km), Simone des Forest (1910-2004, French Motor Racing Driver), Giovanni Bracco (1908-1968, Italian Motor Racing Driver) and Eugenio Castellotti (1930-1957, Italian Motor Racing Driver). All have signed with their names alone in ink to clear areas of the pennant. A rare grouping of signatures featuring three World Champions and including the rare signatures of Ascari, Hawthorn and Castellotti, all of whom tragically met untimely deaths. Some water staining to the tip of the pennant, only slightly affecting a few of the signatures, G The present pennant was signed on the occasion of the first ADAC 1000 Kilometer-Rennen Nurburgring which took place on 30th August 1953.

HILL GRAHAM: (1929-1975) English Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1962 & 1968. A printed oblong folio menu for a Famous Names Ball organised by the Guild of Professional Toastmasters at the Dorchester Hotel, 20th May 1972, featuring a presentation of the Best After Dinner Speaker Award for 1971 to Graham Hill and incorporating an image of Hill, signed and inscribed in bold blue ink to a clear area at the centre of the menu by Hill. Also signed and inscribed in black ink by actor and comedian Alfred Marks (winner of the award in 1970). Rolled and with some heavy surface creasing, only very slightly affecting the signatures. Together with a selection of other menus and printed ephemera relating to the Guild of Professional Toastmasters, mainly unsigned although a few featuring autographs of John Thaw, Sheila Hancock, Frank Muir etc., also including a menu in the form of a jigsaw, 22nd May 1971 (complete and included in the original box), an A.L.S. by Boris Johnson, 20th February 2006 and a white and red short sleeve Mitre sports jersey individually signed by sixteen Welsh footballers including Terry Yorath, Joey Jones, Peter Sayer, Brian Flynn, Leighton James, Rod Thomas, Dai Davies etc. Some overall age wear, FR to G, 14

A Clifford Series Empire Made Racing Sports Car, electrically operated, remote controlled (boxed), together with a Modern Toys Police Department tin plate car, and a friction drive Lambretta toy (boxed) CONDITION REPORTS All with some wear, dirt and scuffs, some damage/losses. Police car has denting, rusting, quite a lot of scratches and possibly some overpainting, and some pieces seem to be missing to underside and mechanism seems to be missing. Lambretta box has some wear and tears, and handle bar is broken off of the bike. Please note that we can make no guarantees as to whether or not complete nor whether in working order.
