The Property of a Gentleman and Racing Enthusiast1982 Datsun 280 ZX CoupeRegistration no. LCN 679XChassis no. HS130950030Odometer reading: 47,601MOT expiry date: February 2022 * Low mileage unrestored example of a significant Japanese sports coupe* Rare 5-speed manual two-seater model* Excellent running and driving with much history on file Completely redesigned from the previous 240 and 260Z models, the 280ZX was aimed squarely at the US market, with softer suspension, more sound insulation, more comfortable seats and greater levels of luxury equipment including power steering and high-end audio. The first Datsun to see the Nissan badge used, the 280ZX was usually specified with automatic transmission and it switched from carburettors to fuel injection to meet US emissions requirements. Marketed as a sports two-seater, as seen here, and a 2+2, the 280ZX proved to be a strong seller in the US market and while sales were good in Europe, very few survive in good condition. As restoration costs far outweigh resale values, good original cars like the one presented here are the desirable and intelligent choice. With its period style of silver over blue two-tone paint and glass sunroof, this Z car has patently been cherished all its life and wears its years very well, testament to its low mileage and careful ownership. Well known by the UK 'Z Club' the car was shown to great acclaim at the 1990 Z Rally celebrations. Cared for by specialists Ainsworth Engineering of Sussex, the Z wears new tyres, fitted in January 2021 and was last regularly used in 2014. It has now been carefully recommissioned and is ready for a new owner to relive the heady days of the 1980s in.Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: /100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Fitted with a tuned 1,500cc engine, this buggy is understood to have been built in 2006 by VW enthusiast husband and wife Tim and Helen Rowley. The VW engine is fitted with twin Weber downdraught carburettors and the interior sports Cobra vinyl trimmed reclining bucket seats and American Pro Comp instruments. Weather equipment includes a custom-made vinyl trimmed removable hardtop. After some time in storage, the buggy has been recommissioned, with a new VW fuel tank being fitted. The Property of a Gentleman and Racing Enthusiast1968 Nerus SilhouetteRegistration no. N/AChassis no. N/AEngine no. WM258Odometer reading: N/NMOT expiry date: N/A * Rare and highly competitive racer* Lotus Twin Cam engine and Hewland gearbox* A great entry car for historic sports car racingDesigned by Cedric Selzer, Jim Clark's race engineer in 1963/64, who came up with a conventional spaceframe chassis clad with aluminium panels, the Nerus Silhouette was intended to run in the Formula F100 series. This was a short-lived attempt to do for sports car racing what Formula Ford had done for single-seaters, Formula F100 was announced in the UK in 1969 but lasted for only a couple of seasons. F100 was conceived along similar lines to Formula Ford, lightly modified production engines and road tyres being mandatory, and was intended to replace the sometimes ill-supported sports-racing and GT events at club meetings.Believed to be one of five cars created, the example offered here is powered by a 2-litre Lotus-Ford twin cam motor, mated to a Hewland Mark 8 gearbox. Running twin 48mm Dellorto carburettors and dry sump lubrication with fully adjustable suspension, the car is running and driving but following some years of inactivity will need careful recommissioning and the safety equipment updating. Raced by David Beckett, it ran in the Spa Six Hours in 2001, 1990 FIA papers and a rolling road report from that year are also available. A fabulous opportunity to break into historic racing in a truly special car. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 47/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The Property of a Gentleman and Racing Enthusiast1936 Riley 12/4 Kestrel SpriteRegistration no. DGF 972Chassis no. SS27K5227Odometer reading: 00733MOT expiry date: N/A * A genuine SS chassis numbered Kestrel Sprite* Upgraded with modern wheels and tyres* Good body, paint and a newer interior Revered by many vintage car enthusiasts as an exceptional powerplant that compares well with much more exotic machinery, the heart of any Riley is the wonderful twin-camshaft engine, which gives excellent performance from just 1,087 cc. Introduced in 1926, the four-cylinder unit went on to power various Rileys, until 1957. The new for 1936 Kestrel 6-light sports saloon was offered with the 12/4 1,496cc Sprite engine giving 61bhp; sporting twin carburettors. Complementing this fine power unit is the ENV Wilson pre-selector four-speed gearbox and Girling mechanical rod-operated brakes with a patented operating mechanism. This six-light Kestrel was built on the 112.5' long-wheelbase chassis and was purchased by the vendor in 2016. He has since fitted the Kestrel with 16 inch wheels and radial tyres. The sprite engine has been replaced by a standard tune 12/4 engine, which is currently running without a waterpump. The Kestrel has an attractive body, thought to have been designed by Stanley Riley and built at the Riley works, finished in a lovely combination of red over grey. The leather seats have been recovered at some time. There is some history with the car, including the older V5C registration document; the car now has a new style V5C. Presently running and driving, but having not seen active use in recent years further works and some recommissioning are still necessary. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 60/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Convertible with HardtopRegistration no. Undeniably stylish and chic, the R107 has started to be appreciated by classic collectors and this 450SL, with its lusty V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission remains a wonderful touring car. Finished in metallic red with black leather interior with very 1970s period grey cloth inserts, it can be best described as sound and usable with room for improvement. With its low mileage and hard and soft tops, this is an iconic sportster that is also MOT and road tax free; although it has a fresh test certificate with no advisory items. 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SprintRegistration no. 569 UYVChassis no. AR 1493 08616Odometer reading: 89,848kmsMOT expiry date: Exempt*Low mileage with good history*Good paintwork and interior trim*A stylish sports GT *Left-hand driveThe 750 and 101 Giulietta series was Alfa Romeo's first foray into the 1,300cc class and proved immensely popular; it probably saved the carmaker. With its beautifully balanced design and jewel-like 1,290cc twin overhead cam engine, it found nearly 180,000 buyers in berlina, spider and various coupe forms, in its production run from 1954 to 1965. Of course many have succumbed to corrosion and neglect but the example seen here has obviously been cherished and preserved beautifully. Delivered in March 1959 to a customer in Italy, according to its Alfa Romeo Centro Documentazione Provenance document, this Giulietta was originally Bianco Gardenia but is now presented in a beautiful period dark blue, with a lovely correct blue/grey vinyl and cloth interior. Purchased by the present owner at the 2016 Automotoretro fair in Padua, Italy, it has been mechanically and electrically restored by marque experts DTR Sports Cars at a cost of some £30,000 (bills available) in 2020. This is a matching numbers car, fitted with the rare 5 speed gearbox option and an expensive handling kit which makes it even sweeter to drive. A great opportunity to acquire a Giulietta that is a delight to drive and just as pleasing on the eye. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 93/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1969 Lotus Seven Series 3Registration no. H3299BBD (Spanish Historic Registration)Chassis no. LSB 2454Frame no. BL2162Odometer reading: 9,878 miles* Matching numbers car * Two private owners from new* Lotus Classic Certificate of Vehicle ProvenanceWhen the Lotus Seven was launched in 1957, designed by the legendary Colin Chapman, it was far ahead of any other sports racing cars of the era. The car was so right first time, it is still in production today, as the Caterham. It is the second most copied car on the planet. Lotus produced the classic Seven through until 1970, the Series 3 benefiting from a strengthened chassis, wider wheels and tyres, slightly wider and strengthened Ford Escort Mexico back axle, exterior fuel filler, and even a fuel guage! This Lotus is a genuine factory built Seven that was released from Lotus Components in Hethel on the 18th April 1969, and shipped to the Lotus distributor in Canada. The optional extras were stated to be mag/alloy wheels and a heater. It was part of the very last batch of approximately 70 LHD now classic Lotus 7s assembled by the factory. It was purchased by an enthusiast in Calgary, who had a small car collection, and used it mainly for the local car club events. The last recorded competition event was on the 11th September 1979, although it is said to have participated in hill climbs in the early 80s, after which the car was put in to dry storage. The Lotus changed hands for the first and only time in 2012 at 8238 miles, when the present owner shipped the car to Spain, via the UK. Whilst in the UK it was inspected by the Lotus Seven Registrar, who confirmed that it is a genuine, original Lotus. It still had the original tyres, so it was refitted with Pirelli Cinturatos, so that it could be driven safely, and pass the Spanish ITV. It had all of the original equipment, the hood and seat belts pretty much unused. The aluminium body bore the scars of a few competition mishaps, and after 42 years was too brittle to restore properly, the chassis had been oversprayed in silver with a rattle can, in an effort to enhance the appearance. It had also been modernised with Caterham wings and rear lights, which have now been replaced with the correct items. The chassis was sent to Xtra Special Sevens, checked to be rust free, and in perfect alignment. It was powder coated in Lotus grey, and a beautiful new aluminium skin hand formed around the chassis, by a skilled craftsman. Wherever possible the original parts and components were cosmetically restored, the bolts re plated/re chromed, the mag alloy wheels re finished to concours standard. When you sit in this car, you are sitting on the original seat fabric, holding the original Springall steering wheel, and looking at the original dashboard. Even the carpet over the transmission tunnel, is the original item. Compare the black and white picture of the engine bay taken from the Series 3 section of the Lotus Seven Register, with the colour picture, it is identical, right down to the Barnacle suction rear view mirror. Even the exhaust silencer and tail pipe were remanufactured to the original pattern and it has the correct Thorpe PT 675 brake/stop/side lights. It must surely be one of the most correct Lotus Seven Series 3s.The sidescreens are original, although the old opaque plastic windows have been replaced, and the hood, frame and fittings are totally original. This lightweight Lotus is powered by the original Ford Cortina GT crossflow engine, with the Weber 32 DFM twin choke downdraught carburettor. During the rebuild the ignition was upgraded to an electronic distributor head, which combined with a new coil gives a much improved and reliable spark.Whilst the chassis was being refinished, as a matter of house keeping, the gearbox was stripped and checked and rebuilt, and later the rear axle was also rebuilt with a new crown wheel and pinion, to the correct standard ratio of 3.77:1. The clutch plate was renewed whilst the engine and gearbox were out of the car. All of the serviceable bolts and fixings were retained, re plated and reused. The front brake calipers were serviced and replated, new discs and pads fitted, and the rear brakes received new cylinders and brake shoes. The brake and clutch master cylinders were also serviced. The front suspension components were media blasted and re finished in Lotus Grey, the cast components were ceramic coated to keep the surface good for many years. The Spax shock absorbers were repainted, and new logos applied. The 4 branch header and exhaust system were also ceramic coated in a period silver, for a durable and attractive finish.During the present owner's tenure, the Lotus twice entered the annual Classics and Legends event at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia, and had an outing with the South of France Lotus Seven group, for a blast up Mont Ventoux. It also won a concours trophy immediately after restoration at the Marina Alta Classic Car Club. The really great news about a Lotus Seven as a classic car, is that although 50 years old, it keeps up with and will even out perform many modern cars, and has an aluminium body that will not rust. With the Caterham versions still in production today, outwardly unchanged, this car still looks perfectly at home on the roads of the 21st Century as it did in the 60s.. As an added bonus, it is a real head turner.During the research of the car's provenance, a gentleman from Calgary was in touch. In 1973 he actually viewed the car as a possible purchase. Sadly the car was well over his budget at the time, and he settled for a cheaper more used model, which he still owned at the time of the correspondence. Interestingly he was reunited with our car in 2012 as it was being prepared for shipping, and confirmed that it was the same car he viewed in '73. There is a signed document from him to support this history. This car comes with a NOVA certificate, so that it has cleared customs and can be registered in the UK, and the Spanish registration papers which should enable registration world wide. This Lotus would sit well in any collection, but is no 'trailer queen', and could equally be enjoyed for fun days out.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 93/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1963 Porsche 356C CoupéRegistration no. TBAChassis no. 127210Odometer reading: 88,733MOT Expiry: N/A *Very original 356C*Supplied new to Sonauto Porsche in France*Maintained with Porsche parts only The Porsche 356 was Porsche's first ever production car and is arguably one of the world's greatest sports cars. Originally introduced in 1948, the 356 had a 17 year production run with the 356C being the last revision before the introduction of the 911 in 1964. The 356C's performance was enhanced significantly when it was introduced in 1963, and was offered with disk brakes and dampened steering. These additions made the car much more responsive than the 356B, and arguably more enjoyable to drive. Other features that helped to distinguish the 356C from its A and B predecessors include revised bodywork (identified by dual air intakes on the engine lid), and larger front and rear windows. This example is a European specification car and was originally delivered new to Sonauto Porsche, France in 1963. The car was then imported to Lebanon in 2015 where the current owner acquired the car in 2019. The car has been maintained meticulously with Porsche parts and is very original and believed unrestored, yet also refreshed with some new parts. The exterior and interior of the car is in very good condition, and the car runs and drives very well and as it should. The 356C is a historic and revered Porsche that helped lay the foundations of the Porsche sports cars that is renowned today. This example will offer a new owner the opportunity to own and enjoy the car for many years to come. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 81/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1983 Matra MurenaRegistration no. A692 EHNChassis no. DX 704441EEngine no. N/AOdometer reading: 114,393 (184,099 kilometres)MOT expiry date: 03/02/22 * A rare model of an idiosyncratic sports car* Mechanically totally overhauled with significant performance upgrades* Good history with previous ownership of 27 yearsThe Matra Murena is a rare car in any form and this example is particularly special. At the last count there were only 18 Murenas on the road in the UK, the majority of which are 1.6s, this example is the only one with this engine specification, having a 2.2 litre motor that has been tuned to give more power than the top of the range 'S' model. The engine was rebuilt by Roy Gillard of Redwood Repairs and consisted of a reground crankshaft, re-bored block, water pump reconditioned, cylinder head replaced, and a new camshaft especially made by Piper Cams. Invoice on file. The engine was converted to accept twin reconditioned 45mm Dellorto carburettors and was set up on a rolling road where it achieved 144 bhp. Putting all this power down is a new clutch on a lightened flywheel and a 10% higher top gear has been fitted. The suspension and cooling systems have been overhauled and upgraded, including replacement trailing arms, a known weak point. These and the complete chassis have been extensively Waxoiled, part for works totalling more than £6,600. The coachwork was repainted some 20 years ago but is wearing its age well. A rare example ready to be enjoyed. 1971 Fiat 500LRegistration no. APN 938KChassis no. 2836624Odometer reading: 53,975MOT Expiry: N/A*RHD example*Previously restored*Unique sports exhaustThe Fiat 500L, or 500 'Lusso' as it was known, was produced between 1967-1975 and was essentially a better appointed version of the standard 500. The car featured an additional chrome bar on the front fascia, updated interior, black steering wheel, plastic dash, plus reclining seats and carpets. This 1971 example is in excellent condition and has been previously restored. The car has plenty of receipts on file from a previous owner who undertook the restoration, with the bodywork and paint appointed by Weenie Fiats in the West Country. There are also receipts for a 650cc engine that was purchased in Italy, as well as receipts for Fiat 124 pistons that were fitted in 2010. The sump is also an Abarth replica, and the car has a sports exhaust. The car runs very well, and the little twin carb engine together with the sports exhaust add to the already enjoyable driving experience. The car was also photographed for a Christmas advertising campaign for Jo Malone perfumes, however it is not known whether the images were officially used in print. The car is well finished inside and out, and the paint and interior trim present particularly well. Overall the car is in excellent condition and would prove to be a very enjoyable classic runabout. On a recent test drive this little wolf in sheep's clothing performed faultlessly, a spirited drive, excellent performance and sporty sounds with no undue rattles or noises from within its comfortable cabin.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 88/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1960 Triumph TR3ARegistration no. 52 VVTChassis no. TS82163Odometer reading: N/AMOT Expiry: Exempt *UK RHD example*Stunning Wedgewood blue colour scheme*Restored in 2010 The Triumph TR3A is a beautiful classic British sports car. Originally developed from the TR2, the TR3 provides an enjoyable drive from its hearty engine and refined chassis. Essentially a facelift of the standard TR3, the TR3A offered a new wider front grille, exterior door handles, a lockable boot, and full tool kit. The new look gave the car a wider stance and much more grown up look. This 1960 example is a UK right-hand drive car, so is one of the few 1,286 UK cars built. A full restoration of the car was carried out in 2010 by TR specialists, so the car presents very well. The car is finished in this stunning Wedgwood blue colour scheme with the dark blue leather interior. The side screens, tonneau, hood cover are also new and in superb condition. The engine and gearbox were rebuilt in the restoration with the cylinder head converted to unleaded, adding an element of usability. Other enhancements include a new rack and pinion steering system, servo disc brakes, alternator, overdrive, electronic ignition, Kenlowe electric fan and bluetooth audio with aux. The car also has a good history file including all the handbooks. The car runs and drives very well and feels very tight, with the additional upgrades adding to the driving enjoyment and usability. A lovely example. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 90/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300d 'Adenauer' LimousineRegistration no. 440 XUGChassis no. 189.010.22.002641Odometer reading: 63,485MoT expiry date: exempt*The last word in automotive luxury in its day*Automatic transmission*Rare right-hand drive model*Superb history file with thousands spentIntroduced in 1951, the Mercedes-Benz 300 owed the design of its independently suspended oval-tube chassis to the 170S of 1949, and would later provide the mechanical basis for the incomparable 300 SL sports car. Additional refinements appropriate for the company's top-of-the-range luxury saloon included an improved steering mechanism and remote electrical control of the rear suspension ride height. Initially developing 115bhp (DIN), the 3.0-litre, overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine was increased in power for succeeding models. Other improvements included larger brakes (with servo-assistance from 1954); optional power steering; and three-speed automatic transmission as standard on the 300d. Custom built by Mercedes-Benz's most experienced craftsmen, the conservatively styled 300 was luxuriously appointed and trimmed with materials of the highest quality. Fast and elegant, it was one of very few contemporary vehicles capable of carrying six passengers in comfort at sustained high speeds. It was the car of choice among West German government officials, and throughout Europe and the USA was widely favoured by businessmen, financiers, and politicians. Indeed, 'Adenauer' became the 300 saloon/limousine's unofficial model name, after German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, its most famous customer. This 'Adenauer' formerly belonged to Sir Freddie Laker. There are numerous bills on file amounting to vast sums spent on the vehicle, which include a full respray and interior trimming. which is vendor-rated as in very good condition and comes with an old-style logbook, article trimmings featuring the car and various model related manufacturers brochures/manuals.Footnotes:Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereVendor Score Total: 61/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. A. Upfill-Brown Collection, Buckland Dix & Wood, December 1991; Dr. A. L. Lloyd Collection, Bonhams, March 2013. C.M.G. London Gazette 2 January 1900: ‘For services as Principal Medical Officer of the West African Frontier Force on the Niger.’ Wordsworth Poole, who was born into a medical family at St. Paul's Cray, Kent, on 7 December 1867, was the son of Samuel Wordsworth Poole, an M.D. of Aberdeen and, later, vicar of St. Mark’s, Cambridge, and the grandson of Richard Poole, an eminent physician, psychiatrist and phrenologist, who practised in Edinburgh. He was educated at St. Olave’s School, London, where he won several scholarships and then proceeded to St. Catherine's College, Cambridge where he entered the medical faculty. Completing his training at Guy's Hospital, and qualifying as an M.B. and B.C.H., he was unimpressed with the humdrum prospects of a provincial G.P., and Wordsworth Poole, after a short time as house surgeon, went forth to play his part in Empire, later jotting: ‘There was a young Cambridge M.B. Said I won't be a Cambridge G.P. But to Africa's shore I'll stick ever more And now he's a K.C.M.G.’ Fortunately for posterity’s sake, during his time in Central Africa, Poole kept a journal and wrote many letters to members of his family. Edited and published circa 1960 by Michael Gelfand under the title ‘Doctor on Lake Nyasa - Being the Journal and Letters of Dr. Wordsworth Poole (1895-1897)’ these writings, often quoted below, provide a rare insight into an important period of British rule in Central Africa, dealing as they do with the final overthrow of the armed forces of the African chiefs and Arab leaders who conducted a huge traffic in slaves around and beyond the shores of Lake Nyasa. They also contain much of interest from a medical perspective and many references to the life led by the early Europeans in the protectorate. British Central Africa On 5 January 1895, Poole was appointed to the Administration of the British Central Africa Protectorate as second Medical Officer. Bidding farewell to his brother, Francis, at Cairo on 19 February 1895 he embarked for Zomba, via Suez, Zanzibar and Mozambique, arriving on 17 April. Upon arrival, he observed in a letter to his Aunt Mary that there was a great mixture of nationalities in the tiny community of Zomba: ‘There are British, Yaos, Atongas, Arabs, Hindi, Goanese, Zanzibaris, Makua from Mozambique, Persians, a jJew, Zulus, Angoni - all speaking different languages’. As was to be expected, Poole at once commenced to treat the sick, one of his first calls was to make an African a wooden leg, his leg having been bitten off by a crocodile. Promotion was swift and, following the resignation of the incumbent, Dr. Rendall, by October he held the post of Principal Medical Officer, on the recommendation of the Commissioner, Sir Harry Johnston, who said of him, he had 'shown himself to be a most capable man and he can stand the climate and likes the country.' Wordsworth’s job was not an easy one, however, involving as it did, leaving his post at a moment’s notice to attend to members of the administration. Malaria and its complication, blackwater fever, were the most serious disadvantages of the country. The mortality rate amongst the officials and settlers must have been one of the highest in the world with an overall annual death rate of around 10 percent. The death rate among officials was particularly high. In 1897-98 there were 81 officials, of whom one-fifth were always on leave. Out of the total of 65 in the country there were 12 deaths (18 per cent), practically all in the prime of their life. Although conditions for the handful of Europeans in the capital were harsh, Poole discovered he could get by set apart from fair-skinned females; his military neighbours, on the other hand, he found rather trying. 'Take them all round,' he wrote, 'soldiers are about the most uninteresting men out - Their calling seems to wash anything original out of them and they become exasperating bores.' However, he enthusiastically entered the social life of the place, becoming secretary of the sports club and building a tennis court. Being of literary interests, he was also the prime mover in establishing a library. In September 1895, Wordsworth Poole took part in the first of several expeditions to suppress slavery on the southern shores of Lake Nyasa. As the expedition approached Chief Matipwiri's village, he was conscious of the ever present dangers ‘It was difficult to get rid of an uncomfortable feeling that some of the enemy lurking in the grass might loose off a gun at you, trusting for his chance of getting away in the long grass, in which they dodge about like hares. This did actually happen, for just as we were setting about to bivouac, three of the enemy fired from the bush, hitting no one but one of them got dropped by two bullets’. Contemplating the forthcoming battle 'I had been thinking all day what I should do when the action commenced,' he imagined himself treating the casualties, with his, 'boy carrying my Winchester to be handy’ in case he should be attacked when attending to the wounded. The reality, however, was somewhat different. The enemy evaporated and, ‘various parties went out burning villages and killing a few folk.’ The following month, enabled by an absence of sickness in Zomba, Poole was thrilled to join Major C. E. Edwards on his campaign against Zirafi, a powerful chief living on a steep and impregnable hill covered with boulders of rock, ‘with people potting at you from good cover.’ The skirmishing en-route was described by Poole in a letter to his mother ‘I and my hospital carriers were passing a clearing when about 70 yards away from us two guns blazed off from behind rocks. The porters threw down their loads and hooked. My boy ran up to me with my rifle, and I was trying to catch sight of someone to fire at (I’m fairly steady with the rifle now) when I saw a flash and some smoke, followed by another, and a bullet fell near my feet, knocking up dust into my face’. They pushed on, intent on punishing the naughty Zirafi, but, on finding the enemy's town abandoned, embarked upon the next stage of the campaign against the wicked Mponda, who in turn gave himself up in fear of the oncoming white men. Poole, meanwhile, was busy in his hospital and had been performing several operations, ‘Last Saturday I took off a man’s hand. He had been shot through the wrist by one of Zirafi’s men about six week’s ago. Since then he has had Tetanus, but recovered at Fort Johnston. He is...
