BEATLES THE: An autograph album containing individual signatures of George Harrison (‘love from George Harrison’, a good, bold blue ink example, the page neatly annotated and dated to the upper and lower edges in the hand of a collector indicating that the signature was obtained in person at his home in Esher, Surrey, on 11th August 1967) and Ringo Starr (‘Best wishes, Ringo Starr’ on a white 12mo card affixed to a page within the album with sellotape to the upper and lower edges, causing a stain to both which slightly affects Starr’s greeting, but not his signature, accompanied by a loosely inserted A.L.S. by Maureen Starkey, Ringo’s wife, one page, small 4to, Weybridge, Surrey, n.d. (13th April 1967) to Miss. Christine Ellisdon, thanking her for her letter and continuing ‘Enclosed is Richie’s autograph. He thought, with the fold being in it you wanted two. I’m sure you won’t mind though….., together with the original self-addressed envelope by Ellisdon) and also including a secretarial signature of John Lennon (‘Love to Christine, John Lennon xxx’; most likely in the hand of Lennon’s housekeeper, the page annotated in ink and pencil to the lower edge in the hand of a collector indicating that the ‘signature’ was obtained at his house in Weybridge on 11th August 1967), the album also including a few other signatures of famous pop singers and entertainers of the 1960s including Charlie Drake, Ian ‘Tich’ Amey, Trevor ‘Dozy’ Ward-Davies, John ‘Beaky’ Diamond, Keith Fordyce, Peter Asher, Keith Relf, Jeff Beck, Long John Baldry, Lulu, Eddy Arnold etc. Most of the pages neatly annotated in the hand of a collector. Together with an interesting and unique series of original candid photographs (3.5 x 3.5 and slightly smaller) all relating to The Beatles and the owner of the autograph album, including an image of John Lennon driving his open-top sports car (his face obscured by the reflection on the windscreen), Lennon’s home in Weybridge (2), George Harrison’s home in Esher (5), Ringo Starr’s home in Weybridge (2), an image of Paul McCartney seated in his car alongside Jane Asher outside his home, 19th August 1967, his house in St. John’s Wood (2) etc. Some light age wear to the album and the binding loose (repaired with sellotape). G to about VG, 15 + album Provenance: The signatures and photographs were acquired by the vendor and her twin sister (seen together in one of the candid photographs included in the lot) in the Summer of 1967 and are accompanied by various typed anecdotal notes regarding their attempts (both successful and otherwise) in meeting The Beatles, in part, ‘….John lived in Weybridge, Surrey. On one occasion we knocked on his front door and his housekeeper answered. She told us that he was having his dinner and gladly took our autograph books advising us to come back later……We then moved on to Esher in Surrey where George lived. Again we handed our autograph books into his house and were rewarded with his autograph. He came to the window to thank us for coming but nicely asked us to leave!.....We then visited Ringo’s house….We met both him and his wife as we had presents for his baby……Unfortunately we were unlucky in getting Paul’s autograph…..we visited his home in St. Johns Wood, London, many times and even took a photograph of him and Jane Asher in his car….We once waited outside the Abbey Road recording studios…..Paul came out saying he would be back shortly and would sign our autograph books. Unfortunately, we had to leave before his return!’

Great War 1914-15 Star Medal Trio of Lieutenant Henry St John Saunders-Jones 30th Punjabis, Late South Wales Borderers, Died of Wounds Received in German East Africa 3rd August 1917, “Seen Fighting to the Last with his Revolver”, 1914-15 star “2221 PTE H ST J S JONES S WALES BORD”, British War and Victory medals “LIEUT H ST J SAUNDERS-JONES”. Medals have been mounted for wear at some point. Lieutenant Henry St John Saunders-Jones was born in Llanfrynach, Breconshire in 1895. He was the eldest son and third of four children of the Reverent Davin Saunders-Jones. His father had first served as the vicar of St John’s in Brecon before taking on the parish of Llanfrynach. Henry was educated at Christ College in Brecon. He was interested in sports and excelled at Cricket, Rugby Football and Athletics. He left education at the age of 15 to join Messrs Rich of Brecon as a motor engineer. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the Breconshire battalion of the South Wales Borderers as a private and was sent to Aden and India with this regiment. His skill as a motorist attracted the attention of his commanding officer and he was given a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Reserve of Officers in June 1916 and was attached to the 19th Punjabis. He relinquished his commission to go through a course of training at Quetta Cadet College. He passed out in five months and was given a commission in the 30th Punjabis and sent to German East Africa with the regiment in December 1916. The regiment was heavily involved in actions in the trying climate of German East Africa. It was during the operation to capture Tandamuti Hill that he was mortally wounded. Details of the action appear in the regimental history: “On the left the 30th Punjabis struggled alone through very thick thorn bush before dawn and then moved up the right bank of the Mohambika River. The thick bush prevented sightings of the friendly troops to the right, and the sepoys were isolated from the main battle. However German observation posts on Tandamuti Hill and on the east side of the valley were observing the progress of the Punjabis and telephoning the information to Field Companies near them. Soon the Punjabis became nearly surrounded by German companies and fought alone without artillery support. Major W K P Wilson, the Punjabi’s commander for this operation, was severely wounded and captured, 6 other British and 3 Indian officers soon became wounded or missing. Platoons and companies were deployed in bush so thick that they soon became disorientated and lost, or else they walked into enemy ambushes”. During this action the regiment had the following casualty rates, 1 British officer died of wounds (Henry St John Saunders-Jones), 4 wounded and 2 missing; 2 Indian officers wounded and 1 missing; 5 Sepoys killed, 4 died of wounds, 104 wounded and 142 missing – a total of 265 casualties. The book “Brecon Remembers World War One – The Men Who Died” states the following, “Henry was reported missing in action on August 3rd, 1917 and his death was confirmed on August 12th. Reports at the time confirmed that he was involved in a surprise attack by the Germans in overwhelming numbers and his men were forced to retire. Henry was seen to be wounded in the attack, but carried on fighting with his revolver. When he saw the position was hopeless he ordered his men to retire and send out for him as soon as possible. He was last seen fighting gallantly, though surrounded by the enemy. When the Germans had retired and the ambulance was sent out his grave was found near the spot he was last seen in the battle.“ The Christ College memorial states, “Lieutenant Henry St John Saunders Jones, seen Fighting to the last with his revolver, is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery and is remembered on the Christ College War Memorial. An impressive memorial service was held in Cantref Church the following month. The entry in the De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour states that a brother officer wrote of him: “His brother officers all deeply regret the loss of a gallant comrade, who was highly respected and loved by officers and men. By his coolness and pluck under fire he set a splendid example to his men and at all times was a perfect example of a brave and fearless leader. His absence is felt very much by everyone, as he was most capable in the field, and at all times displayed the spirit of a true gentleman”.
