Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Himalayan and Abyssinian Cats" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Himalayan and Abyssinian Cats stamp issued February 5, 1988. Domestic cats have so long held the attention and fascination of man, that their breeding has become an art in itself. Cat shows are held throughout the country, and owners and breeders attend with their prize pets to compete in such categories as "Best of Breed" and "Best Cat." The Himalayan breed is the result of breeding the shorthaired Siamese Cat with Persians. The result is an exquisitely beautiful cat the color of the Siamese, but with a stockier body, a broader head, and rounder, blue eyes. The hair is long and sleek, and, unlike the Siamese, the Himalayan has a pleasant voice. A perfect pet, this lovely-looking cat also sports a gentle, affectionate personality. The Abyssinian Cat is also the result of careful breeding, but its looks are far more classical than luxurious. The Abyssinian, in fact, looks much like the sacred cats of Egypt. We are reminded of it in the statues, carvings and paintings left behind from that ancient civilization. Slender and quick, this cat often has a wild side, not evident in other breeds. Its thick, soft coat appears a grayish brown, but is actually multicolored. It has a gentle sound, sometimes compared to the cooing of a dove. The Abyssinian, with its fascinating and distinctive characteristics, does not breed easily and generally produces small litters. Thus, it is among the most expensive of all cats. The Abyssinian is truly a classic cat in many ways. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 17 in. Unframed. (B11369)

Nicholas Cudworth (B. 1947) "Sports #1". Signed lower right. Mixed media painting on board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combo Cover for the Great Britain 1986 Commonwealth Games stamps issued July 15, 1986. Nick was born in Derby and achieved a BA Hons. at Chelsea School of Art. He has been a practicing artist for over 35 years. Nick also enjoyed an early career in music as a piano player with the band Siren and recorded several blues/rock and roll albums in the 1960's on John Peel's label. His successful reputation as an artist has been gained by having exhibited in group and one man shows in galleries throughout the world including London, Milan, Winnipeg and New York. He joined The Portal Gallery in Piccadilly in 1997 where he has since had several successful one man shows. Nick was commissioned by The Royal Mail to design a set of stamps for the Commonwealth Games which were on show at The Post Office Museum in Bath. In 1999 The National Portrait Gallery in London purchased a painting of film director Ken Loach for their permanent exhibition. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 16.25 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B10115)

Lot 71

Herb Kawainui Kane (American, 1928 - 2011) "1800s Life in the Marshalls - Drummers & Dancers" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Drummer and Dancers stamp issued September 15, 1993. The rhythmic beat of a drum guided the graceful motions of ancient Marshallese dancers. Often these undulating movements were performed while sitting or kneeling, drawing attention to the ornately-tattooed arms of the female dancers. The floral crown worn by one of the women suggests she was of a higher class than the others. Yet, all are dressed in traditional skirts fashioned from finely plaited pandanus leaf matting. Each woman also sports ear ornaments believed to have been created from the white inner bark of trees. This fascinating glimpse into the 19th-century Marshallese life is attributed to French artist Louis Choris. Image Size: 14.75 x 17.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed. (B14476)

Eclipse with John [Jack] Oakley up signed lower left 'J. N. Sartorius pinx' and inscribed 'Eclipse by Marske' oil on canvas 34.5 x 42cmFootnote: Provenance: Thomas Miller Whitehead, sold to John Dunn Gardner (1811-1908) on 11th May 1891 for £120 with its pair of Smolensko, Thence by descent Exhibited: Grosvenor Gallery, Sports Exhibition, 1890, no. 225, lent by Thomas Miller Whitehead Eclipse, the most famous racehorse of the English turf by Marske out of Spiletta, was foaled during the great eclipse of the 1st of April 1764 at the stud of the Duke of Cumberland. At first, he displayed no remarkable character except bad temper (and interestingly in most portrayals of him he is shown with his head down and ears back). He first ran as a 5-year old on 3rd of May 1769 at Epsom in a race of 4-mile heats, winning easily at 4 to 1 on. For the 2nd heat, an Irish gambler Dennis O’Kelly made a wager that he would place all the horses, pronouncing as he did so, the most famous phrase in racing history: “Eclipse first, the rest nowhere.” Standing at just over 16 hands and of bright chestnut colour, Eclipse won all 18 of his races, usually beating his opponents by 10 or 20 lengths. He was retired early in 1770 mainly due to the lack of credible competitors, to the stud of O’Kelly who had bought him in two stages for 1750 guineas. His stud fee was 50 guineas a mare and he is believed to have sired in the region of 350 winners. Eclipse died in 1789 aged 24 following an attack of colic, when he was dissected by Charles Vial de Saint Bel, who published in 1791 An Essay on the Geometrical Proportions of Eclipse , in which he stated that it was worthy of notice “that the heart weighed 14 pounds”. His skeleton belonging to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is on loan to the National History Museum.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The picture is in plane. The paint layers are very worn, notably in the sky. The varnish is clear, glossy and even with a slight bloom across the surface. The frame is in a stable condition with some wear to the gilding.

He was winner in 1813 of the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. He won seven of his eight races and retired to stud at Great Barton, the Bunbury estate in Suffolk. Smolensko sired many winning offspring including the filly Gulnare (winner of the 1827 Epsom Oaks) and Jerry (a colt who won the 1824 St Leger).Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined.
