Edgar John Varley (British, 1839-1888) Lane near St Martins Church, Guernsey watercolour, heightened with white, titled to gallery label verso, ex-Christies 5 5/8 x 11 1/8in. (14.25 x 28.25cm.) * Varley succeeded P. J. A Mitzi Gaynor bicycle given to her by Bing CrosbyRoyal Sports Lightweight blue single-speed 1950s bicycle with a red leather seat, made in England, with a hand-painted sign affixed to the handlebars inscribed, 'A Fugitive from the Zanick [sic] Salt Mines / Mitzi,' with an illustration of Mitzi in a leggy dancing costume with a top hat. The studio photographer was on hand when Crosby jokingly gave Mitzi this bicycle which presumably freed her from the clutches of her contract at Twentieth Century-Fox and into the arms of a waiting Paramount Pictures to film Anything Goes (1956) with the famous crooner. Accompanied by a photo of Bing gifting the bicycle to Mitzi on the set of the film. 20 x 37 x 66 in.

Olympics David Broome signed Equestrian Jumping FDC XXIV Olympiad. David McPherson Broome CBE born 1 March 1940 is a retired Welsh show jumping champion. He competed in the 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1988 Olympics and won individual bronze medals in 1960 and 1968 on his best-known horse Mr Softee. In 1960, he was also voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and at the 1972 Games served as the Olympic flag bearer for Great Britain. Good Condition. London: R. Ackermann, [?1822-24, but plates dated 1802-5]. Folio (350 x 280mm). Title and 102 aquatint plates (only, [?]of 120) by W. H. Pyne, each plate with multiple subjects (lacking text, title heavily spotted, a few plates lightly browned, some mainly marginal staining and spotting). Contemporary green half morocco gilt, top edges gilt (extremities rubbed, split at foot of joints, some scuffing). Provenance: "To Vincent Lines, R.W.S., A.R.C.A. with grateful appreciation of his social service as Principal of the Hastings School of Art, from Fanny E. Borrow, December, 1956" (presentation label on front pastedown). MOTOR SPORTS: An unusual vintage 8vo page removed from an autograph album individually signed by seven men associated with motor sports, several of them World Record holders, comprising Malcolm Campbell (1885-1948, British Land & Water Speed Record Holder), Henry Segrave (1896-1930, British Land and Water Speed Record Holder, the first person to hold both records simultaneously. Segrave was the first person to travel at over 200 mph in a land vehicle), Kaye Don (1891-1981, Irish World Record breaking Car and Speedboat Racer), George Eyston (1897-1979, British Racing Driver who broke the land speed record three times between 1937-39), Joe Wright (World Motorcycle Speed Record Holder of the 1930s), Francis Curzon (1884-1964, 5th Earl Howe, British Motor Racing Driver, winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans, 1931) and Woolf Barnato (1895-1948, British Racing Driver, winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans 1928, 1929 & 1930). All have signed in bold black or blue fountain pen inks with their names alone. Also signed to the verso by nine military officers and political leaders individually including William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950, Canadian Prime Minister 1921-26, 1926-30 & 1935-48), Richard Bedford Bennett (1870-1947, Canadian Prime Minister 1930-35), Claud Jacob (1863-1948, British Field Marshal of World War I), Gerald Trotter (1871-1945, British Brigadier-General of World War I), Cyril Deverell (1874-1947, British Field Marshal of World War I), Cyril Newall (1886-1963, British Marshal of the Royal Air Force) etc. VG

Venice: Apud Iuntas [Lucantonio Giunta], 1601. 4to, full leather; 23 full-page and one double-page illus, printer's device on title and at colophon, decorated initials and tail-pieces. Fourth ed. First published in 1569, this was one of the first books on sports medicine. Mercuriale stressed the importance of excercise for health, drawing heavily on the classical world for support.
