Company School Ornithological WatercoloursThe exquisitely detailed ornithological paintings seen in the following lots are legacies of the Anglo-Indian relationship fostered at the end of the eighteenth century, when the East India Company expanded its influence across the country. The British colonialists settling in India were fascinated by the exotic flora and fauna they encountered and attempted to document it by commissioning local artists to paint natural history pictures. The artists producing these works came from a range of Indian artistic traditions – Mughal, Maratha, Punjabi, Pahari, Tamil and Telugu. Three distinct schools emerged, first in Lucknow and Calcutta, then later in Delhi. Here we see examples from the Calcutta School at the turn of the 19th century and later examples of ‘Company School’, a term that refers to Indian artists working in a European tradition. 1975 MG B GT Jubilee Model Transmission: manual Mileage: 64303Conceived in the late 1950’s and launched in 1962, the MGB would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. The B carried on MG’s traditional role of providing affordable sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast. The popularity of factory hardtops for its MGA predecessor and the success of the Coupé variant influenced the decision to produce a closed version of the MGB that would provide the increased practicality and refinement which was being demanded by the maturing sports car market. Styled by Pininfarina, the MGB GT coupé arrived in 1965 to be greeted by universal acclaim. The adoption of a stylish fastback bodyshell enabled the provision of two occasional rear seats which, when folded flat, created a generous load platform accessible by the rear tailgate. The more robust five-bearing B-series engine was fitted to the GT right from the start and when Abingdon finished production, over 125,000 MGB GT’s had been built. The MGB’s popularity remains undiminished, one of the major factors being the continuing availability of spare parts and expertise, making it one of the easiest classic cars to run and maintain.Originally registered on 1st August 1975, this Jubilee Model MGB has only had three former keepers from new. After a period in storage the car has recently been recommissioned and mechanically starts on the button and we are advised she drives well. The green paintwork will require refreshing and the wheels are also in need of refurbishment. However these limited edition MGB’s are well worth the time and effort. Of the 751 examples manufactured, one was destroyed in an advertising stunt that went wrong and it is thought about half of them remain. Complemented by V8 wheels and supported well by the various car clubs, this MGB GT is offered for sale without reserve.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1970 Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce Transmission: manual Mileage: 30601The first of Alfa Romeo’s Bertone styled coupés, the 1.6 litre Giulia Sprint GT, was launched in 1963. Mechanically the stylish new 2+2 was much the same as the Giulia TI sports saloon, featuring a five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, coil-spring live rear axle and disc brakes all round. A 1300 model, the GT Junior, arrived in 1966 and the range was further extended the following year by the launch of the 1750 GTV, the latter powered by a 1,799cc, 118bhp version of Alfa’s classic twin-cam, four-cylinder engine, in a four-headlight version of the existing bodyshell running on 14-inch wheels. A short lived but nevertheless popular model, the 1750 GTV underwent a minor mechanical and styling revision part way through production before being replaced by the 2000 version in 1972. More powerful than the 1600 but sweeter running than the 2000, the 1750 is the choice of the Alfa Romeo enthusiast who knows their GTVs. Driver’s cars par excellence in the Alfa tradition, Bertone’s timelessly elegant Giulia coupés are among the most exciting sports saloons of the 1960s and today all versions are highly sought after.This lovely, rare, right hand drive Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce is in very good condition throughout. A condition report written for a previous owner in 1998 tells of the body being restored and new wings fitted. Supplied new with Webasto sunroof with a very rare deflector, a clock and outside temperature gauge. This 1750 GTV has been very well maintained, and no expense spared by the two previous owners over the last 24 years. The car is finished in Biancospino with black interior and comes supplied with a UK V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in December 2021, a large history file containing invoices from Alfa specialist Gran Turismo, Andrew Thorogood and Titus Rowlandson of Victory Garage showing all the work carried out since 1998, old MoT’s dating back to 1996, the early condition report and an article relating to the Alfa GTV. The current owner has just had the Alfa Romeo GT Junior rubber over rugs fitted to protect the carpets, he also reports that everything works on the car. 1988 Vegantune Evante Series 1 Transmission: manual Mileage: 33450Renowned worldwide for its successful racing engines, the Spalding-based firm of VeganTune diversified into car making in the early 1980s with the Lotus Elan-inspired Evante, a separate company - Evante Cars Ltd - being set up to handle its manufacture. Although Elan-like in appearance, the glassfibre-bodied Evante employed a stronger, tubular-steel spaceframe chassis rather than the Lotus’s backbone type and was powered by VeganTune’s own Ford-based VTA twin-cam engine. Producing 170bhp and 140lb/ft of torque from its 1.7 litres, this engine, with its belt-driven camshafts and accessible water pump, was reckoned much easier to maintain than the Lotus version. Only produced to individual customer order, the Evante failed to weather the late 1980s recession. 1968 Sunbeam Alpine Series V Transmission: manual Mileage: 129519The Sunbeam Alpine was launched in 1953 as the first vehicle from Sunbeam-Talbot to bear the Sunbeam name alone, since the 1935 takeover of Sunbeam and Talbot by the Rootes Group. Ken Howes and Jeff Crompton were tasked with doing a complete redesign of the Alpine in 1956 with the goal of producing a dedicated sports car aimed principally at the US market. 1983 Porsche 928 S Transmission: automatic Mileage: 71047These fabulous sports cars were unveiled at the Geneva Salon in 1977 and voted Car of the Year for 1978. It was intended as an upmarket replacement for the long-running 911 but in the event Porsche's rear-engined classic would outlive its younger sibling. The front-engined 928's stylish hatchback body featured aluminium doors, bonnet and front wings in the interests of weight saving, while ingenious impact resistant 'bumpers' made of colour matched plastic were incorporated into the nose and tail. 1987 Porsche 928 S4 Transmission: automatic Mileage: 113408Originally intended to replace the company's iconic 911, the 928 attempted to combine the power, poise and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort and equipment of a luxury saloon. The body, styled by Wolfgang Möbius under guidance of Anatole Lapine, was mainly of galvanised steel but the doors, bonnet and boot were made of aluminium to save weight. Polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic; an unusual feature for the time that was intended as both a styling feature and to reduce drag. In 1980, the 928S was introduced with a larger 4.7 litre engine and wider wheels and tyres, whilst in 1987, the engine displacement was further increased to 4957cc with the introduction of the now highly desirable 928 S4.This well presented example showing 113,408 on the odometer is offered in good condition and is one of the most sought after models of this iconic ‘yuppie’ car of the 1980s. 1978 MGB GT Transmission: manual Mileage: 28835The fixed-roof MGB GT was introduced in October 1965. Production continued until 1980, although export to the USA ceased in 1974. The MGB GT sported a ground-breaking greenhouse designed by Pininfarina and launched the sporty 'hatchback' style. By combining the sloping rear window with the rear deck lid, the BGT offered the utility of a station wagon while retaining the style and shape of a coupé. This new configuration was a 2+2 design with a right-angled rear bench seat and far more luggage space than in the roadster. Relatively few components differed, although the MGB GT did receive different suspension springs and anti-roll bars and a different windscreen which was more easily and inexpensively serviceable.This lovely example presents well in black and should appeal to enthusiasts and first time classic buyers alike. 1959 Austin Healey Sprite Mk. I ‘Frogeye’ Transmission: manual Mileage: 56123The Austin Healey Sprite is a small, open sports car which was announced to the press in Monte Carlo on 20th May 1958, just before the Monaco Grand Prix. It was intended to be a low-cost model that 'a chap could keep in his bike shed' yet be the successor to the sporting versions of the pre-war Austin Seven. The Sprite was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company which received a royalty payment from the manufacturers, BMC. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a mildly tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and many other components from existing cars to keep costs down. The little Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the 'Frogeye'. The 43bhp, 948cc engine was upgraded with twin 1 1/8” SU carburettors. The rear axle was both located and sprung by quarter-elliptic leaf springs, again with lever-arm shock absorbers. There were no exterior door handles; the driver and passenger were required to reach inside to open the door. There was also no boot lid and access to the spare wheel and luggage compartment was achieved by tilting the seat-backs forward and reaching under the rear deck. This superb Sprite has been extensively restored to a good standard and as such presents in fabulous condition. The light blue coachwork is unblemished as is the interior. The hood is new and the car has been very well trimmed inside. Upon turning the key the engine fires up immediately and we are advised this ‘Frogeye’ drives every bit as good as she looks. These fabulous cars are remarkably simple and can be taken care of by any reasonably competent DIY mechanic. Parts are easy to obtain as the cars are well supported by the various owner’s clubs. 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Duetto Transmission: manual Mileage: 52747The Alfa Romeo Spider 1600, to give it its official factory name, was manufactured during 1966 and 1967. The name 'Duetto' came about from a competition held by Alfa Romeo to distinguish the car from its Giulia 105 series stable mates, the Coupé and Berlina, and was accepted for its reference to the two-seat layout. The Duetto name only applied to the 1600 model; two later variants, with different engine sizes, were the 1750 Velocé and 1300 Junior. All of the models are commonly known today as roundtail spiders. These advanced motor cars were fitted, as standard, with twin cam engines, five-speed gearboxes and disc brakes on all four wheels.Offered here is a unique opportunity to bring back to its former glory a rare and beautiful genuine 1967 Duetto Spider. First registered on 25th May 1967, the car was fully restored in the mid 70’s by the previous owner Mr. Frank Pollock who, after enjoying the car extensively, sold it on to the vendor in 1988. The car was a concours winner no less than six times between 1981 and 1992 and amazingly, much of its concours documentation remains within the car’s history file including scoring sheets, entries and pictures. Also included in the beautifully presented history file are photos of the bare metal restoration along with virtually all its tax discs and MoT certificates between 1977 and when the car was laid up in 1998. The story, an all too familiar one, is that the car, was put into the vendor’s garage, along with a Sprint Speciale (also featured in this auction), when he started spending more time working abroad. As his career blossomed, time flew by and unbeknown to him a tree branch fell and broke a hole through his garage’s roof. Further deterioration followed until the cars found themselves in their current state. Upon close inspection however, the cars appear to be in better condition than an initial glance might lead one to believe. The cellulose paint has survived very well overall, with both the boot and engine bay presenting very well. The interior, with some very rare elements, on the whole is salvageable, despite clearly needing a new hood.Supplied with its V5C logbook, original service book, instruction book, toolkit, history file, tax discs, MoT test certificates, magazine articles, restoration photos, concours history and many Alfa Romeo Owners Club magazines. 1958 Jaguar XK150 SE Roadster Transmission: manual Mileage: Although having a family resemblance to the XK120 and XK140, the XK150 was radically modernised. A one-piece windscreen replaced the split screen and the wing line no longer dropped as much over the doors. The bonnet was widened, opened down to the wings and on the roadster the bulkhead was moved back four inches to make the bonnet longer. In the interior, the XK140's walnut dashboard was replaced by one trimmed in leather. On the early drophead coupés, an aluminium centre dash panel with an X pattern engraving was fitted which looked similar to the early 3.8 E-Type. It was discontinued after June 1958. Thinner doors gave more interior space. The standard engine, the same as fitted to the XK140, was the 3.4 litre DOHC Jaguar straight-six rated at 180bhp at 5750rpm but most cars were fitted with the SE engine that had a modified cylinder head with larger exhaust valves rated at 210bhp at 5500rpm. Twin 1 ¾ inch SU HD6 carburettors were fitted. Four-wheel Dunlop 12” disc brakes appeared for the first time although it was theoretically possible to order a car with drums. Either wire wheels or disc wheels could be specified. Suspension and chassis were very similar to that on the XK140. These were high performance, well-appointed sports touring cars and could cope with long distances with alacrity.This superb example of the highly desirable SE derivative of this British classic is finished in iconic British Racing Green with green leather interior. The present owner has recently spent between £50,000 and £70,000 on its restoration which includes new leather interior, new hood and carpets to name a few of the extensive list of items which have been restored on this fabulous sports car. Its refreshed 3.4 litre engine is mated to a five-speed Getrag gearbox and performs strongly as expected and indeed as it should. This Jaguar wants for nothing and looks resplendent in its new paint colour. The history file contains photos of its restoration and includes the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate which confirms that it is a matching numbers car sold by Jaguar Cars, New York in September 1958. 1988 Jaguar XJS Convertible Transmission: automatic Mileage: 16404In 1975, the Jaguar E-Type finally gave way to an all new and more efficient Jaguar, the Jaguar XJS. This new luxury grand tourer, although never quite having the same sporting image as the E-Type, was actually more aerodynamic with the final example leaving the production line on 4th April 1996. At that stage, 115,413 units had been manufactured during a 21 year production life. Power came from the Jaguar V12 engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission although the manual gearbox was soon dropped. V12 engine cars were unusual at the time with notable exceptions coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJS compared well with both Italian cars; it was able to accelerate to 60mph in 7.6 seconds and had a top speed of 143mph.This XJS V12 Convertible is presented in Satin Beige metallic with Barley hide and has incredibly low mileage from new. Also boasting low ownership, the first custodian kept the car until he sadly passed in 1998 when title was transferred to his widow who kept the car in long term storage for sentimental reasons. Old MoT certificates show that in 1996 the car had covered just 11,958 miles and by the time it went into storage a year or so later, the mileage had only increased to 14,214 miles. In June 2007 the car was then sold and recommissioned by the third owner, and an MoT in that year confirms the mileage at 14,813 and by 2008, the odometer reading was still only 15,036. The car was then once again put in long term storage where it remained until it was sold in 2014 and, again, recommissioned and fully serviced with an expenditure of over £7000.  The MoT test from March 2015 states the mileage as 15,163. Later that year, the owner decided to offer the car at an auction at the Car Fest show where our vendor, an avid car collector, purchased the XJS and has since used it sparingly, on high days and holidays, increasing the mileage to just 16,404. 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Transmission: manual Mileage: 25140Inspired by the AC Cobra that was effectively the British AC Ace sports car powered by the large American Ford 4.2 litre, V8, the Sunbeam Tiger first saw the light of day in 1964. Based upon the Rootes Group, Sunbeam Alpine, the Tiger - with the Ford power plant slotted into the engine bay, it became what is surely one of motoring's true 'wolf in sheep's clothing'. Precise handling was retained by keeping the Alpine's rack and pinion steering with stunning performance due not only to the muscle V8 but also due to the lightweight Alpine shell.This very nice example was fully restored in 1984 and is presented in red with a black interior, a new walnut dashboard and has recently had new black carpets fitted. The present owner has looked after this wonderful and powerful British classic since his acquisition in 2015, making sure the oil was changed regularly and in 2016, he renewed the master and slave cylinders as well as having new shock absorbers fitted at the same time.
